Engagement Ring Help
I got engaged last night!!! My FH and I have been together for 3 year on 10/24.
I'm so happy and can't wait to start planning our wedding and future together!!
I wanted to know if it is ok to wear my E-Ring to bed, in the shower, doing dishes, ect. I don't want to lose it or forget to put in on when I'm running late. It 's a diamond in a white gold setting, so I know it is a hard stone and will not scratch. Whats your thoughts on this? What do you do?

Re: Engagement Ring Help
First off, CONGRATS! Second, WELCOME! Be warned that this board is very addictive! Third...I wear my ring through everything, the only time I take it off is when I am cleaning it. Edited to add that many people will give you different answers to this question it really becomes a matter of personal preference.

Re: Engagement Ring Help
never wear your diamond in the shower, to do dishes etc. even in the morning, put it on after getting ready as a finishing touch. avoid lotions, hairspray etc from getting on it!i do not sleep with mine because its a high tiffany setting & i'd probably scratch my face!
edited to say, as debbie said you'll get a million different answers here, but as i was told you shouldn't and my ring still looks like the day i got it.

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Congratulations! When I got my ring appraised the guy told me NOT to wear it in the shower, while doing dishes, etc. He said that since I don't want to take it off during the day at work, when I wash my hands and put lotion on constantly, that I should clean the ring every 1-2 weeks so that it doesn't get buildup on it (and so that it shines like crazy)!

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Congrats!
I wear mine to bed, but I don't wear it in the shower, with the reason being that it pulls on my hair when I shampoo!
I do remove it when I do yard work, but that's because my rings turn under when I have gloves on and it makes it difficult to work with them.
As for doing dishes and other household chores, my rings stay on.
I have a round solitaire and specifically asked for 6-prongs for safety reasons (as well as appearance). I have a high-cathedral setting like jennbaby, but it doesn't seem to bother me. It's just a personal preference.

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Congratulations Amy and welcome!!!!
I wear my ring ALL the time. The only time I take it off is if I am cleaning, gardening or the 1 or 2 times I've gone fishing with FH. I also was forced to take it off when I went in for surgery recently but as soon as I got back home my FH slipped it right back on my finger.
It is a high marquis stone & I am always afraid of scratching my FH with it when we are sleeping but I told him I'm not taking it off & he is fine with that.

Re: Engagement Ring Help
I take mine off at night, planting flowers, in the shower, doing dishes, and it gets in the way when you are wrapping favors!!! (You'll find that out when I am long gone!)I was hit daily in a little cup of warm water, regular dish detergent (like Dawn) and a spritz of Windex. I bought an infant toothbrush that I clean from the underneath of the stone with - gently, and then dry it w. a soft cloth.
After a couple of months you'll be a little less concerned about it's well being! Like the first time you smack it against the car door and frantically search it for a scratch or chip. It's a tough little bugger though - like your love for one another!
Congrats and Welcome!

Re: Engagement Ring Help
ok girls im going to add my expertise here! i know most of you say that you pretty much do everything with your ering but the truth is you shouldnt! you are probably saying to yourself' who is this girl telling me what to do with my ring' well i was born into a family of jewelers! you shouldnt sleep with or take showers or wash your hands with the ring on unless you are out in which that case you can loose your ring! but the washing and lotion add build up under you stone/stones...which will cause your stone to look very cloudy and dull. sleeping with your ring may cause it to get loose b/c you may catch a blanket on a prong and it could lift! BE CAREFUL! i am in our store 6 days a week and the # 1 reason for jewelry repairs is b/c customers refuse to take it off while sleeping. the other main reason you shouldnt sleep with it is b/c us being women we tend to swell(admit it!) and in the morning your fingers are puffy and it doesnt allow your finger to irculate around the ring- weve cut many many rings off also, not a good thing!as for cleaning your ring-NEVER EVER clean your ring with soap, toothpaste, alcohol, ammonia or any other cleaning solutions besides jewelery cleaner...using anything else can harm the metal that your stone is set in. i think i am done preacing if anyone has any other questions i will be happy to help you out!!!!

Re: Engagement Ring Help
also anyone with a platinum ering- get it checked by your jeweler often because even though plat is the best metal it is also the most purest and softest! example: if you have a high setting and bang it often even if it isnt a hard hit the prongs may shift out of place so definatly make sure you keep an eye out for it and have it checked an tightened by your jeweler!!!!

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Another piece of advice:NEVER let your ring out of your site. If you are at a jewler and they offer to clean it, ask them if they plan to do it right in front of you..if not, pass! It only takes seconds for someone to replace your diamond.

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Good advice ladies. I always take off my ring to work, wash dishes, lotion my hands, and to sleep. At first, I also, did not want to take it off to sleep, but after scratching FH a few times, I had to
But now I see that's the right thing to do

Re: Engagement Ring Help
thanks for the advice! What kind of cleaner do you suggest? And why does the dish detergent soften the metal? Is it that strong?

Re: Engagement Ring Help
Get it insured. My Sister in law had her's stolen and it wasn't insured! She is so upset and I feel so bad for her. NObody wants to tell their husband that they lost the ring under any circumstances.
