So for the past few days i've experienced this little red rash on my engagement ring finger. I thought maybe it was the soap and cleaning stuff that may have caused it but it hasn't gone away and seems to get worse when i wear my ring...i am so upset about this. I did some research and found that people can develop allergies to the metals found in rings as regardless of if they are platinum, white gold or gold they contain some other kind of metal, like nickle. Sooooooooooo i heard about boiling the ring for 15 minutes and then letting the rash heal....has anyone heard of anything or this before I am so sad! and want to wear my ring i feel naked without it.

Here is another option I found online: HTH-Meg
The best method for disinfecting surfaces and jewelry is to thoroughly clean it with diluted household bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).

You can try putting a layer of clear nail polish on the inside of the metal. I've done this with some of my cheaper rings. It keeps the metal from touching your skin and prevents the reaction.

yea i've read about doing this but I don't want to put nail polish on my ring that makes me too nervous! I also heard about having the jeweler coat the ring to creat a barrior. I am actually boiling it right now

Yeah I've been getting that lately and I think it's because I have diamonds that go half way on both sides and I think that the water and soap ( b/c I'm a teacher and I wash my hands all day long) get caught under my ring. The rash takes forever to go away and when I put my ring back on it starts all over again! It sux.

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
it may even be more simple-- like the weather and water getting trapped under the ring and causing your skin to be dry or irritated-- so take it off when you sleep or keep it of when you are at home just give the finger some air and maybe put cream on it-

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
You might have an irritation there that having a ring on makes worse.
I would suggest asking a dermatologist and a jeweler to see if you can find a solution that's good for you and your e-ring!

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
I know people can be allergic to certain metals, I was allergic to some metal... I think it was nickel, when I got my belly button pierced it never really healed right, and they told me I was allergic to the metal, as soon as I changed to a gold ring I was fine...
Maybe see if your jewler can put a barrier on it like was mentioned before? I hope it works out for you!

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
i get it from fake jewelry - im not sure what substance but if i wear anything that is fake ill get like a dry itchy scaly rash....its gross.....
i thought platinum was hypo allergenic? that is what i have and luckily it hasnt bothered me....ive also worn white gold and silver without a problem....but anything else irritates my skin....
maybe because its winter and very cold? and your skin is extra dry? try keeping the ring clean and using lots of lotion.....it might just be eczema (spelling?)

Yeah i've read a lot about the whole metal reactions people get from the other elements in the ring. It doesn't matter if it is platinum, gold or white gold they mostly have other metals in them from what I am reading, something i never knew!! I just hate how it was fine and now it is bothering me so frustrating!!! You learn something new every day I guess!

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
do you take your ring off when you shower, put on hand lotion or other creams? if not, that may be the cause of the rash.

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
How long have you had the ring? If you have had it for awhile I dont think its that you are allergic, I would think if you are allergic it would happen shortly after getting it. I would stop using the cleaning stuff you are using. I know Ive had rings that held in heat on my finger and caused me to break out, especially if its really tight. If it keeps happening I would take it to the jeweler, maybe they can help you figure out what the problem is

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
I've read that your own body chemistry can change and it also varies person by person.. this is why some people need their white gold rings dipped monthly, and others every 6 months or so.
I have a yellow gold ring on my right hand and i've had it about 2 years now. a week ago my friend noticed it left a green ring on my finger! It was the weirdest thing, especially since I had worn the ring for a long time without ever having that happen. I just looked down at my finger now and it's totally normal. Maybe something I ate or the weather caused a reaction that made it happen at that time? Who knows!
If you've had your ring for a while and are only having this problem now, it's probably either the weather, something you ate that changed your body chemistry temporarily, or maybe something that got stuck under/inside your ring that is irritating your finger...
i hope you can figure out what it is!

Re: Engagement Ring Rash???
This happened to my girlfriend. She went to the dermo and he gave her some cream and she is fine. I would check with the dermo.
