How close are you to the couple? If they're registered, I personally would get something off of their registry, or just give a check. If you're looking for something more 'creative,' how about a gc to their favorite restaurant and nice bottle of champagne? Or toasting flutes and champagne?Another good option is wedding planning stuff - though that's more of a gift for the bride (but still very useful). You could get a nice wedding planner (barnes & noble has cute ones) and a few subscriptions to wedding magazines (ebay has some great deals).

Re: Engagemet Party Gift?
umm some gifts i got was lenoz toasting flutes, lenox frame (you put your invite on one side and a pic on the other) some serving ware. my aunt actually got me a ohoto album from things remembered, she put a picture of my invite in the pic slot on the cover and had it engraved with 'John & Jackie's engagement party June 14, 2008' and i loved it!! i loved how she put the invite in it and all my pics went right in there!

Re: Engagemet Party Gift?
i only wanted things off my registry and was thrilled when I got exactly that - particularly anything related to my china settings. However - I did love the monogrammed towels i received.
Cake cutting set is also a nice idea.
