Hey everyone.. my future mother law is insisting on throwing us an engagment party. I originally didn't want one because i know people are going to have to give us shower gifts and wedding gifts and i didnt want to add another financial burdon. She wont take no for an answer.. we we agreed on a casual engagment bbq... lol ... my friend said i should make a registry for the engagement party.. what kind of stuff should i put on it?? dont people usually give money for engagment parties??

Re: engagment party..
some do and some just show up w nothing.
register if you want specific gifts. You could wait a bit if you want them to apply those to the shower.

Re: engagment party..
definitely just start your registry..you can build on it as time goes on...I had a ton of engagement parties this year and it was sooooo hard picking out gifts. I really wished they would have registered. Just make sure its not all your big ticket items, people typically spend less on e-gifts. But maybe like some nice picture frames, toasting glasses, summer outdoor serving stuff (dishes, cups, ect..). HTH

I felt the same way about the e-party as you do AND my FMIL INSISTED on throwing us one! I honestly had soo much fun at it though! And people only give you what they can afford, my gifts ranged from $50 per couple to $300 per couple and I appreciated everything I got. I did make a registry because I had so many people asking what I wanted so it just made it easier. I registered for mostly kitchen stuff. HTH

I am doing the same thing... we wanted to have a party though, nothing fancy just a get together with everyone to celebrate since my wedding isn't until 2012... I am not registering for anything, I don't want people to feel obligated to get gifts... I always assumed the registry was for the shower... if people bring gifts I will be pleasantly surprised! Hopefully cash lol since we could use it for the wedding!

Re: engagment party..
I always thought an engagement party was really like a please help to fund my wedding party!
but I'm prob going to do a small registry for some small items for the house since FH's fam apparently doesnt believe in giving money as a gift!
