Re: Engagment Question?

I'm sorry to hear about this!

I'd say if it was a gift and HE called it off you should be able to keep it.

If you call it off he should get it back.

I hate these kind of posts

My Fh told me if this were to happen, he would NOT want the ring back.

Re: Engagment Question?

If I called it off, I wouldn't want the physical reminder. If he called it off, I would probably be so hurt/angry, I would sell it!
I am sorry you are going through this, Allure

allure....so sorry to hear that this is happening....
Don't know anything about the law regarding this, but just wanted to add that I hope things work out....and if they don't, it will be for the best.

Re: Engagment Question?

I know its a difficult time, but eventually the ring should be given back. The ring would be filled with all the fights the couple had, and a reminder of the guy that the girl doesnt have. I could see not wanting to part with it initially, but when the girl starts dating again she's not going to wear the ring of her ex fiance, and if she did, I would like to see a guy who would go along with that. (it would make the guy insecure)

STICK IN THERE! Whatever the problem is, keep trying to fix it if you can. I went through a little rocky time(before I got engaged), but then i thought of my life without him, and decided that he was more important than the problems, and the outside problems even cleared up over time.

Re: Engagment Question?

I've had 2 broken engagements and the last one, I kept the ring up until 3 months later. every time I looked at it, I was reminded of everything I went through and all the stress would come back. i cried everytime I saw it. I ended up giving it back to him and it was for the best.

My heart goes out to you because I know this is such a stressful time

Re: Engagment Question?

Okay, I have been thru this also,. The first thing to do is calm down. I was with a jerk for almost 8 years, and finally saw the light when I caught him cheating on me on the internet. I also had a engagment ring and a rocky relationship. I had given him a diamond engagment ring also. I kept the ring, he need not ask me back for it becuase he lost the ring I gave him. (!!!!) I still have it( the ring he gave me) locked in a safe deposit box, trying to deceide if I want to sell it or make it into something. In time if u keep the ring it does not hurt anymore to look at it down the road. I knew it was the right thing, and if I had not dumped the jerk, I would not have met my FH and been 100 percent sure he was the one. See what happens he probably will tell u to keep the ring. PS The jerk I was engaged to got married and he continued to try to get back with me, and he had to be warned by an attorney to leave me alone, I feel sorry for the girl he married, but she knew what she was getting into! Hugs to u we are here for you if you need to talk or vent. If he wants the ring back I would just give it back, he probably will not even get the value he paid for it if he tried to sell it , , if u can work it out try to, if not then take some time for yourself and you will feel better. I promise. You deserve to be happy, my mom and dad used to say, a marriage is easy a divorce is not. If you do stay together make sure u work out the problem.

Re: Engagment Question?

i thought the law was that if the girl breaks it off she has to give the ring back, but if the guy does it, she keeps the ring. this happened to my friend last year and that's what she found out. (though she still gave the ring back cuz she didnt want any memories of that jerk).

ps. im so sorry you have to go through this. i know how difficult it is. hang in there and let me know if you need to vent

Re: Engagment Question?

I hope everything works out for the best for both of you. There is really no right or wrong answer here. Do what you feel is right. If it were me however, I would probably give it back. I would never wear it again and it would just make me more upset to have it.

Re: Engagment Question?

I can only share my sisters experience. Her engagement ended - she had made all the deposits but it was a year+ until the wedding, so she was able to get refunds. Except for the deposit on the dress. She ended up paying the rest of the dress cost, and has the dress under her bed. Originally she thought she'd wear this dress whenever she did get married, but now years later, we're encouraging her to EBay it (its not her style anymore).

She still has the ring - I don't think there was any mention of giving it back. Its in a safe somewhere (I told her she should sell it).

She couldn't return the engagement gifts. Most of them she had exchanged for other items or started using, so she didn't have the gifts to return. I think people understand.

Do whats right for you and your relationship. Don't worry about these details when making the decision.

I am sorry you have to deal with this. I say keep the ring, no matter what the law says. Let him take you to court. Have it melted down or made into a pendant!
