Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

Original post by jannshari

I know it is incredibly tacky to ask a question like this, but I'm having a panic attack here because there is no way to shrink our list down any further without cutting out over 100 people (and our list is at 173 at this point) and I'm just not finding any places that we can afford. The one place that I really wanted to go with so far has basically said that the price they quoted me for a Sunday day wedding in October is the lowest they'll go all year (which I find hard to believe, but if that's what they're saying, how can I argue it?), so I went back to the drawing board and came up with NOTHING. And I've researched a lot of places (via various web sites) that are within my price range, but I'm not sure whether the prices given were accurate or what they included.

So here is my entirely inappropriate question, and please feel free to tell me that it's none of my business, but has anyone had a Sunday day wedding that wasn't noticably lacking in anything for approximately $50 pp? If so, where? I know that's an incredibly low number, but our budget is very tight and I would like to try to stay as close to it as possible.

I'm looking primarily in Nassau County, but would consider parts of Suffolk. Thanks in advance!

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

At this cousin's wedding I mentioned before, they did a couple of things that cut costs, but no one noticed and it was still elegant:

1) The centerpieces were 3 pillar candles, all of different heights, with rose petals scattered around. Rose petals are generally cheap. Plus the BM's carried 1 or 2 calla lillies.

2) They had no favors and I didn't even notice that until 2 days later. Don't feel you have to have favors; get them only if you want them.

3) I bought my dress as a sample sale and saved about 40%. And I didn't have to worry about whether the dress arrived at the bridal salon because it was already there!

I;m not sure who, but someone has mentioned before that they had (or were having) thier reception at a Knights oF Columbus Hall for a great price....Something like 30 or so per head...I am not sure who it was..but you may want to check that out if you cannt cut down on your people...and don;t worrty about what people think about what you paid..if Nobody is helping you, than its nobodys business how much you spend...

Just My 2 cents!

mine at Coral House is $57 pp (this month) on a Sunday afternoon. They may be cheaper in October, or you could try to negotiate. They include a LOT in their package and have been wonderful so far.

november will be cheaper than october i would think- esp the closer you get to the end of it. what about doing it thanksgiving weekend? maybe you'll have a lot of people not showing up.

what about a tent party? i know the expenses can add up with table and chair rentals and all but if your family has a big back yard or you know someone who does- you do save a lot bc you won't have a real per person charge. you could do it in sept or oct when it's still nice out.

also check out east- i know you said nassau- but places in the hamptons or montauk in nov aren't really in season so they probably have good deals going on. hope this helps!

one more thought- what about elks lodges? or polish-american clubs?

AND there is a community center in port jefferson that was newly renovated- i don't think it cost much to rent it out and you have it for the whole day. let me know if you want more info on this.

What about a 3 hour reception with a cocktail hour (instead of a 4 hour reception)? Two dinner choices instead of 3? Maybe things like that would help keep the costs down.

Good luck!

Since you are looking at a daytime reception you could consider doing a Brunch. That should bring down your cost.

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

Fran, that was definitely an option that we were considering, but I don't know of any reception halls that offer champagne brunches. I don't want to have it at a restaurant - do you know of any places that will do a brunch reception???

Wedding Facilities

This might help you in your search. You can see what types of food and if Kosher is available. It also gives you approximately how much per person.

We had our reception at the Meadow Club in POrt Jefferson last August. We had their best menu (including Viennese hour) and we paid well under $100/pp. It was also a Sunday, so I'm thinking that for their other menus, it would be somewhere in the vicinity of what you are looking to pay.

I got a great deal for our wedding on a Sat. afternoon, far better than any evening. We paid well more than double $50pp, but we only had 100 people. It was a great deal for the place and what we got though - WELL below their advertised price. Here's how we got it:

Most importantly, call places you may be interested in, b/f driving out to them, and tell them your dilemma. Don't cut your guest list before you do this.

They will tell you when and how they can work within your budget, if they can. Perhaps they have a Sat. afternoon in July that they are afraid they won't book, they'll give it to you for a deal. Be honest with vendors, and upfront, and they will be with you too-they don't want to waste your time or theirs.

I'm getting married November of this year. The cheapest place that I went to look at was the Swan Club...I think it was $55 per person for Fri night, Sat Day and on Sundays. I'm sure they could accomodate the Kosher meal.
