Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

I know it is incredibly tacky to ask a question like this, but I'm having a panic attack here because there is no way to shrink our list down any further without cutting out over 100 people (and our list is at 173 at this point) and I'm just not finding any places that we can afford. The one place that I really wanted to go with so far has basically said that the price they quoted me for a Sunday day wedding in October is the lowest they'll go all year (which I find hard to believe, but if that's what they're saying, how can I argue it?), so I went back to the drawing board and came up with NOTHING. And I've researched a lot of places (via various web sites) that are within my price range, but I'm not sure whether the prices given were accurate or what they included.

So here is my entirely inappropriate question, and please feel free to tell me that it's none of my business, but has anyone had a Sunday day wedding that wasn't noticably lacking in anything for approximately $50 pp? If so, where? I know that's an incredibly low number, but our budget is very tight and I would like to try to stay as close to it as possible.

I'm looking primarily in Nassau County, but would consider parts of Suffolk. Thanks in advance!

ImperialManor.Com

I believe it may be called the Sterling now. The management of the Imperial booked my wedding but the Sterling did it under the Imperials Name.
They have a Large Room that holds up to 400.

Have you considered maybe another month like Jan, it maybe cheaper.

One more thing to really throw a wrench in this...I need a place that at least offers Kosher style, although it doesn't have to be Kosher.

I know, I know, I'm a pain in the tush!

I just sent you a FM

There's also a few catering halls that are inexpensive. My gf is looking into the Immaculate Conception hall? or something like that- I'll find out and FM you again. It was only $50 p/p- not sure if that was a Friday night though.

Jan is drastically lower priced - I got quoted at the Swan Club for $50pp.

Thanks for the replies and FM! I must sound like an incredibly uncompromising person, but I would rather not get married in the dead of winter. Yes, I know it is cheaper, however, the one place I spoke with today that I mentioned in my earlier post told me that their lowest ALL YEAR, including Jan - March is $65 pp, which is what I was already quoted.

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

We had a wedding on a Saturday afternoon in July and paid $57pp at the Swan Club. I don't know if that is too much (yes it's only $7 over what you were looking for, but $7 x 173 people will add up). October is a popular wedding month so if you're willing to look at another month, you may be able to find cheaper. Would you consider March? It's not as cold as January or February, but may be cheaper than October. Good luck!

What about Huntington Town House? I'm not sure how much they charge pp, but I have heard they are very reasonable...

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

We are looking at October and November. I would much rather not move the wedding up to this coming March because that's not all that far away and far less time to save the money that we need to (FH and I are paying for this ourselves and I make diddly squat after paying my loans every month), and I really don't want to push it to 2005. Geez, I really sound like ridiculously picky!

Julybaby, did you find that a July wedding was generally cheaper or did you just happen to luck out?

Check out The Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. They do beautful weddings and they are very reasonable...especially for Sunday!

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

I know it may sound like an odd question, but what do you mean Kosher style? Does that mean not including non-kosher items? If so, you can request the hall not to serve pork or shellfish, or any dishes that mix meat with cheese. I think they can accomodate on that within reason.

With regard to the price per person, to be bluntly honest with you, I think you need to cut your guest list. I know that it is tough and you'd like for everyone to be there, but you need to realize who is more important to have with you and you certainly don't need to invite your coworkers or neighbors that you don't care for but feel the need to invite.

As an alternative, you may want to look into cutting corners, such as possibly skipping a limo, not doing favors or rehearsal dinner, and getting less expensive invites, etc.

I am sorry, I wish I had some hall suggestions for you, but I know know wedding halls in NJ (which is cheaper to some degree).

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

janshari, not a julybaby, but I believe hers and mine weddings got some discounts due to the 4th of July weekend, and together with that, I think most of the brides on that weekend were under their guaranteed minimum

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

At some places, we got a discount for having our wedding during the summer months, though these places were more expensive than the Swan Club. I was a bit surprised at this, but vendors said that the spring and fall months are the most popular. A cousin of DH got married on a Monday night and saved a ton of money!!! They also paid for the wedding by themselves and they do not have a lot of money. Unfortunately, a lot of people were gone by 10:30. I also heard that Thursday night weddings are cheaper, plus it is supposedly a trendy night of the week to get married (according to same cousin who got married on a Monday night).

I just want to piggy-back on what Alina said - since we got married during a holiday weekend, we had trouble making our minimum. So if you can find a holiday weekend, that may cut your guest list down a bit since people may have other plans.

well....I am having mine at the Coral House in September and it is $67/pp - for a Saturday afternoon. Give them a call, you might get a good deal for one of the off months....

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

I wish I COULD cut the list down, but unfortunately, that list does include only those who are necessary! FH's mother has a huge family (her mother was one of 11 children) and they are incredibly close. That number would be brought down to 40 if we cut out even one family, because we'd have to cut out all, and unfortunately, his parents are divorced and can't stand each other, so we need a bigger buffer. We are definitely cutting corners already - no limo whatsoever, I may be able to get my wedding dress custom-made for free, my mother was a florist, so she may be able to do my flowers for me, etc. The bottom line is the bottom line, and the reception is where most of the money will be spent. I don't need elaborate, but I don't want something where people will wonder what the heck we paid for.

This has been a tough decision - whether or not to even have a wedding like this - but it's a decision we didn't make lightly and I'm just hoping I can find a way to make it a reality.

And yes, Kosher-style meaning no shellfish, pork, or dairy. There are quite a lot of places that if you cut those things out, there's very little left to choose from, and where's the value in half the menu for the same price?

Thanks again everyone. If I don't respond again tonight, it's because I'm going to bed soon!

Re: Entirely Inappropriate Question to Ask...

Our menu had no pork, and only shrimp as far as shellfish was concerned. You can get so many dishes with other foods...

We didn't do kosher style, but we eliminated pork to make sure that people getting the food would not confuse it with beef or chicken. Shrimp was obviously not kosher, and people would be able to see if meat dish had cheese in it.

But I think we had plenty of food and I didn't feel that we lost in value.

As for July 4th weekend, just to give you an extreme case: We invited almost 200 persons, and had a total of 88 or 86 attending!!! And this is with invitations having gone out 3 months before the wedding.
