ethnic weddings?
I am first generation italian/puerto rican..both parents immigrated to NJ, my fiance is portuguese and was born in portugal, hes been here since he was 4... he is the sweetest and has no real preference about how things go..but my future mother in law is evil. She is unhappy with the fact he is not marrying a portuguese girl...i've already booked the church..its a portuguese catholic church..with the ceremony being held in english...the venue we are booking only serves italian style dishes..and the very first time i met his family his dad mocked on italian cuisine...this i will not part from..i am not a huge fan of portuguese food...and the venue is in our budgit, its a nice place..i refuse to change it, i want to incorporate my heritage with his...but i am not sure how to mesh the 2... atleast in a way that will not have his parents sitting there looking all agitated...if it were up to me i would not have them there...but i am trying to respect that they are his family, despite my personal feelings about them...
has this happened to anyone, when having a ethnic style wedding...of different backgrounds?

that's rough but as long as your FH is by your side on the decisions then let your FMIL vent all she wants to whoever she wants because it's your day and your $ and she will get over it. getting ethnic food at a wedding is probably a big cost because my FH is from Colombia and we too are trying to incorporate his background. try including things is a small but big way, we are offering obleas, a traditional Colombian sweet on our dessert table. something that didn't take a lot of effort but will make a lot of people pleasantly surprised. :) good luck!

i woudlnt mind doing that, but their desserts are limited..ive gone to a few bakeries and they just have this custard..its really good and i could incorporate it..and i could probably research that a little more..i like the favor idea..just would have no idea what to do lol

I'm african american/african and FH is Haitian. My FMIL has informed us not to onvite any of his family or any family friends...i assume she sees me as an embrassment.
I have asked FH if we could incorpate some of my African heritage, his response is he doesnt think people will get it or what about his background. Think he doesnt want to offend his mother any more than necessary. I asked him to give me some things from his culture that we can look to add.
I feel like there is always the choice to compromise and if your willing and your FMIL still isnt happy then dont go out of your way to do more. It probably wont change her feelings (i say this based on 5 friends and my mentor who MIL still dislike them after 8+ years of marriage). This is your day, for you and your FH to celebrate your love and that what matters.
