Etiquette Question about Invitations you Receive

Original post by justustwo48

Hey ladies, I have a question/thing I'm uncertain about:

I received a wedding invitation in the mail from one of my sorority sisters and it was addressed to me....and only me. She knows I am engaged although I wasn't at the time I received a STD but she knew we were serious nonetheless. Here's my question:

Am I allowed to bring FH? My hunch is no since the invitation was only addressed to me but I'm still not completely sure. What do you all think I should do? Just go alone which I don't mind since there will be other sisters (we'll probably all be at a table together) or should I bring it up to her and ask if I can bring a guest?

I would ask just to make sure.

I would assume no since it was only addressed to you but I would ask!

I would assume she did not invite your FH which is rather rude I, at least that is what I think...but you can ask her in a nice way... I mean we invited everyone with a guest except for two adults who are not even dating.......so we didnt want them to take someone just to take someone.....

I would assume he wasn't invited, which I agree is rather rude.

If I were in your shoes, I'd either ask or respond no. If I asked and the answer were that my FH was not invited, I'd respond no.

I know many people disagree with me, but I think it's rude to invite any adult to a wedding without a guest - particularly someone in a committed relationship. My FH and I are getting married in 4 months. If I were invited to a wedding without him, I'd find that rather rude and insulting. If the invite came from someone who doesn't even know us well enough to know we're engaged, then I'd definitely have no problem RSVPing no.

It might be she was trying to cut down the guest list and invited all the sorority sisters solo or something... but I'd ask for clarification. (And I still maintain that's pretty rude)

I'd ask in a non-asking way. I'd email or call her, talking about the wedding. And ask something about all the sisters being there. I'd ask how many tables the girls would be taking up. Ask if she knows if others have even gotten married. Even mention something about it being a girls weekend out. Try to feel it out.

My friends and I went stag to a friend's wedding in Alabama and had an awesome time!!!!!!!

A few weeks later the groom told FH I may have to pay for my seat. At the end of it I attended & didn't pay but I still felt slighted.

PAY FOR YOUR SEAT???

* to answer the OP - maybe call some of your sisters and see what they say - maybe one of them asked her already so you dont have to be the one who asks! You don't want to show up and be the only one without a date and then you will regret not bringing FH!

i would ask. you're in a serious relationship. it's not like it's new.

I agree. Ask her..it never hurts to ask

Not everyone is familiar with invitation etiquette, I would def. ask.

I would assume you are invited alone, but since you are engaged I would feel comfortable asking and if she says no, totally understandable.

It is possible the addresses haven't been updated since her STD's went out, but it is possible she only has room to count you as a '1'.

Wow, thank you so much everyone for all of your input and advice!! I really, really appreciate it! I think first I'm going to decide whether or not I can go or afford to go and then based on that I will try to find a way to ask her.

You ladies are the best!!

My FH asked his coworker and she said 'of course ure invited', she just didn't put plus guest on the invites...so I guess asking is the best thing!

Trust me I was twice as confused as I had never heard of it before but perhaps it was to keep the reception in their budget?
