Etiquette Question - Gifts

We received several items off of our registries for Christmas. Normally, of course, when we receive gifts from our registry, we write thank you notes right away.

Normally also, one doesn't (or at least we don't) write thank you notes for Christmas gifts (I assume the reciprocity element of Christmas gifts negates the need for thank you notes for Christmas gifts)...so, the question is...do we need to write thank you notes for the registry gifts we got for Christmas? FH says no, I think yes. Can't hurt, right?

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

Are they from people you would normally get a x-mas gift from. If so it is not necessary. But they do sell thank you cards for christmas so some peopel do send them.

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

I don't think it can hurt. FH & I got a lot of gifts together, I did not write them Thank you notes. I did recieve a check from my aunt for Christmas, however, meant more of engagement gift, she got a thank you!

I dont think it can hurt. But, I don't think it's necessary either! JMO!

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

I don't think it is necessary because it is a Christmas gift not a shower or e-gagement or wedding gift. If you don't send everyone a thank you note for their Christmas gift, then I wouldn't.

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

Who gave you the gifts? We got our china from my mom and dad and other gifts from my sisters and brothers from our registry and I don't plan to give thank you cards.

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

How many thank yous are we talking here? i think better to show your appreciation although i am unsure of whether etiquette dictates this or not. Whomever gave you these gifts will proabably be guests at your wedding too and this will give them a good feeling about how grateful you. imho

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

I would probably send a thank you note.

It could not hurt.

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

We got a bunch of stuff from my boss and his wife...who always give me an Xmas gift, but I never give them gifts (they are kazillionaires and it is not expected) for Xmas/Hanukkah. The other gifts were from FMIL and FSIL and her BF.

FMIL gave us a pots and pans set that she helped me pick out, and FSIL and BF gave us a bed tray, a handmixer, and a carving knife (in addition to some other stuff not on registry). The family got reciprocated gifts, the boss and wife did not. I'm guessing boss and wife need a a thank you card. All of the above will be invited to the wedding.

Re: Etiquette Question - Gifts

Boss and wife- I'd send one too.

The rest, I would just think that they got something they thought we needed. We got a few gifts from the registry for Christmas as well, and I don't normally send family thank yous, so I didn't this year either. (if that helps any)
