Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

Original post by divabride

Lets learn from other brides mistakes. I went to this one wedding where the bride knew her priest was flying in from colombia the day before. She was having her wedding at the reception hall scheduled for 6pm. The priest didnt show up until 9:30!!!!

I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to make it worse! If it makes you feel any better, one of my most favorite wedding's was an upstate wedding. It was an outdoor wedding on the bride's, families property - absolutely gorgeous July day. They had tents and a DJ and everyone had a fabulous time. (Until the groom's ex showed up and the bride chased after her ) But seriously...it was one of the most memorable, good-time weddings I've been to.

I'm sure you all will have a fabulous time at your son's wedding!!

My cousins wedding. They had way too many people for the room they had and it was soooo crowded. They were actually setting up more tables in the room as the guests were walking in. They were very unorganized and so was their hall.

Oh yes I've been to some really bad weddings ..

both of my cousins (not my two favorite people in the worlds to begin with, mind you..)

They had the worst weddings EVER .. bad music (elevator music IMO), bad food (for an afternoon wedding they had danish & stale mini bagels for cocktail hour), bad everything colors ....

AND one took place in Manhattan and ONE was in Westchester -- in 'nice' places, and at a $$$$ per plate!

Goes to prove that money cannot buy good taste

Absolutely!! Went to one where it was served buffet style (nothing wrong with that) except that there really was no room for the station. The plates and utensils were cheap plastic. I sat with my back directly on the coffee urn all night and the beer was in a cooler outside. And no this was not a wedding in a house it was in a place.

This wasn't a bad wedding - just a bad cocktail hour - it was at GW Manor and there were way too many people in the downstairs room for the cocktail hour - nobody could move, the line for the bar snaked back like 30 people and you seriously couldn't move your chair out from your table. The place was beautiful though - just too many people.

My friend's husband's family is about 90% white trash (this is according to her). THe wedding was really funny because it was literally split down the middle - you could tell who was with which family just by looking at them!! Well, I catch the bouquet and who catches the garter - one of the sons of the WT family - 12 years old!!! His drunk dad is standing on the dance floor with a bottle of beer in his hand screaming at his son to shove the garter all the way up my leg - and other indecent things. This poor kid was embarassed out if his mind!! I let him put in on my arm!!

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

I went to a wedding in PA recently and I had a good time simply because I was with a bunch of college friends but...

The wedding was in some type of VFW type hall (not that thats an issue but to get to the ball room, you had walk through a bowling alley!) then the CH had one table of finger foods!! THe dinner was family style! (ham, fried chicken, salad, mashed potatoes, corn and bread) the 'open bar' was out of vodka within and 2 hours! and the DJ was horrible at one point he played 'back that a$$ up' the uncencored version! This was a weddign where the brides family was mostly older chinese women who were highly offended by this music! and the bride looked beautiful but her dress was poorly altered and looked too big on her!!

It was an experience!

a wedding I went too in August 2001. The food was disgusting. I had the chicken franchese and it was a pale yellow color, but it had that sitting out on the counter too long look. The vegetables were cold and the drinks watered down.

FI got very ill from the food.

We were also seated next to the speakers and it was carribbean music all night long. FI got a terrible headache. We wound up leaving before it was over and headed to a Wendy's.

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

I hate to say it because it was a good friend of mine but YES!

It was August and the room had no A/C and there were over 300 people there. (It wasn't the bride's fault though, she specifically requested A/C, they said 'of course' and then the NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING they called her told her that if she wanted A/C, it would be $4000 MORE!!!--- she is SUING them by the way)

The caterer could not handle this many people. Dinner was served extremely late, around 9:30pm or so -- mind you, the CH began at 6:30 and it consisted of only fruit. The caterer obviously didn't have the staff necessary to handle a wedding this size -- plates were not cleared from the table until around 11:30 when the wedding was almost over!! Nevermind the fact that there was only ONE BAR for 300 guests, no wine at all, with ONE bartender and a line that stretched all the way outside of the reception site.

The bride was in ivory and the groom was in CRISP WHITE and it made her gown look dirty whenever she stood next to him.

Over half the guests left around 11pm b/c of the A/C situation, just minutes after the bride had paid to extend the reception another hour to 1am.

And LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

A FIGHT broke out outside and the GROOM tried to jump in -- half the reception ran outside after him to pull him back!!!

This wedding took place in Manhattan btw.

I've been to a few not that great weddings and one really bad one. It was a backyard wedding in Florida, where all the tables and chairs were in the grass and my ankles were being bit to death by bugs, the DJ kept introducing each song (title, artist and year). And as a finale the groom punched his own father out and knocked him unconscious. 911 was called and the bride was hysterical crying. The night ended with two ambulances, loads of cops all over the place and the bride and groom leaving seperately because they were fighting! It was truly a disaster!

Was at a HORRIBLE wedding in Sept. for one of my co-workers.
FIRST- They close the bar a half hour into the cocktail hour.
SECOND- Wouldn't open bar for a half hour into reception (1 hour total closed)
THIRD- The appetizer was pasta in peanut butter sauce with bacon and peas. The salad was wilted and the dinner was horrible. The cake was dry and chalky.
FOURTH- The DJ was obnoxious and in everyones face.
Half the guests left early and the other half was at the bar doing shots the whole night!!!

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

My family call this bad wedding, the one you will always remember. IT was in VT, they had beer coming out of red cooler with spigits, boxed wine. They had salads on the table when we first walked in, withthe dressin in plastic cups with covers. Everything was dirty, the water/soda/beer tasted soooo bad. The CH was cheese and crackers with fruit, which is ok, but there wasn't enough for 125 people. One platter of cheese, one platter of fruit, then they served pizza that tasted like dominoes.. I am living in CT right now, but even up here, no one does weddings like LI!!

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

I have been to 2, YES 2 wedding where there were 'fire' incidents...

1 where my cousins veil caught on fire on the alter...I didn't really notice until a male friend of hers that was seated behind me in the 2nd row VAULTED over me to go beat out her veil...

And the other the tall, thick candle on a stand on the alter had some type of paper decoration around it which caught on fire, so the best man carried it into the back room and next thing you know, we saw a big orange glow coming from the back room. The ushers rushed back (the priest did not miss a beat in the ceremony) and about 1 minute later they all came out, with the best man having no jacket...he used it to beat out the flames!!!

Thank goodness no one was hurt in either incident...but it sure did give us something to talk about for the rest of the night.

I wasn't at it, but a friend of a friend got married during the infamous blackout we had iAugust. My friend said as soon as the priest said'you may kiss the bride, the lights went out in the church.' No joke! Then at the reception, there was no Ac A guest ran and brought his generator from his job so the band could play. the elevators weren't running, so all the guest had to go down in complete darkeness. The bride cried half of the night. But everyone kept dancing and sweating it out. Anyway, it was on the news the next day and was written up in the newspaper and magazines. Everyone present said they would never forget where they were'when the lights went out on August 14th'. The poor bride said 'it was the worst day of her life.. How awful.

Wow, I am almost in tears thinking if any of those had happened to me I would have a nervous breakdown.

Let's see, the ceremony was 2 hours long and the dining room was shaped like an L. I might as well have eaten dinner at home because I have no idea what was happening at the wedding.

ETA: When the bride asked if I had fun...'Of course, the centerpieces were gorgeous.' Not a lie, the centerpieces were the best part.

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

My brother's wedding. They paid to fly in a priest who was a friend of the bride's father. And he did the entire wedding mass while quite obviously drunk. Awful. Then later while taking pictures this priest decided it would be a funny picture if he sat on my 93-year-old grandmother's lap, so he did, without asking. She said she wanted to 'swat him'! (I think she should have!)

Re: Ever been to a really BAD wedding?

I probably shouldn't say this becasue this was actually one of the funest weddings I've ever been to but I've been in the mid-west for a few years and things are a little more low key out here.
This was a rural Wisconsin wedding and let me tell you...tailgaiting is an artform up there. My first clue should have been the fact that they had to fish the groom and the ushers out of the bar across street from the church. Then tehre was the tailgaiting outside the Catholic church after the ceremony, complete with keg and all. In the midwest dinner is served all at once in the beginning and the dancing comes later so that anyone who wants to can leave.
We ate dinner with one of those plastic wrapped utensil packets complete with the combo fork/spoon thingy and a napkin. I'm sorry if I sound like a snob but if you're gonna go with plastic utensils, spring for the fancy Solo brand so I can cut my meat!
Again low key on a different level but still a good time!
And my fiance still wants to knwo when he can change into shorts at our reception....
