o god i feel terrible, it reminds me of myself, who can never catch a break either..my car went on fire last week ;) ..if it makes u feel any better lol...im also not in a great financial position especially right after the wedding, still paying some stuff off and obviously our wedding money wasnt meant to fund a car for me,,so i ended up finaincing a 2007 chrysler sebring sedan..it is GORGEOUS!!..they changed the body style this year, it looks incredible, the price is fantastic, and i have a great finance guy to help you if you had any credit issues like i did ;) lemme know, hope youre ok!! take care!! hey p.s..if youre hurt and need a dr i work for a physical medicine rehab..please lemme know!!

for a smaller car..
toyota corolla & honda civic very reliable- mazda3- fun to drive(just got one last year)
for a larger car...
toyota camry is ranked the best(crash results) and overall, and Honda civic nearby second.. (we just picked up our camry yesterday and i love it)
i was just on the phone with my insurance co. concerned about insurance rates when shopping and they said the highest rates are luxury cars suv's kia's dodge
edited to add: we just traded in our '01 VW passat, started breaking down around 50k miles, ran into a stranger in the parking lot who was talking about VW's and said he had problems around 50k miles too...

I totalled my car in 1998, right when I began grad school (4.5 years of REALLY low income). I bought a 5 year old honda civic EX coupe with 60k miles on it for $8k. It got GREAT gas milage(about 37mpg), and and currently has almost 200k miles on it.
A totally safe and well-built car...... and is also sufficiently cute and fun to drive....

So sorry about your car I HIGHLY recommend Honda Civics, I have an 06 and FH has an 02. Civics are great on Gas Mileeage. I had a Hyundai Elantra previously and that was also a very good car.
I agree with the Civic, I've had mine 9 years now. The new ones are really cute! They are about the same size as the Corolla (FH has one of them, his trunk is slightly larger than mine)

Hybrid's are great on gas but initally are pretty overpriced for what they are I don't really suggest them. Here are a few resonably good cars I suggest...
Hyundai Sonata, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Echo...they are all very well priced, great on gas and are reliable cars.

I love my civic- its 6 years old now, and has only needed basic maintence (oil changes and a new set of breaks). Plus I drive over 200 miles a week on a single tank of gas!

oh, one more suggestion....
If you're buying a new car, the scion XA. It's a compact hatchback which is quite stylish, and all the parts are made by toyota..... we really like ours... once again, safe, reliable, and great gas milage (>35mpg)...

Don't get a Jeep if you're looking for good gas mileage. FH has a Jeep and it is a fre@king gas guzzler. My car isn't the best on gas, but i'll put in $20 and it'll last me the week. If i put $20 in the jeep, it'll last me two days. ridiculous!!!

honda civic. starts pretty low and gets about 40 to the gallon. if you want to splurge a little for better gas mileage, go with the prius. i think it gets about 55.
plus the panels come off, so if you want to change your car color, you just snap on new ones. easy to parallel parl too. =0P

My dad got hit by a drunk driver last year and he lived because of his enormous car (it was a really old Lincoln I think), but when he got his new one he did so much reseach and bought a new Camry.
He's got a long commute and was really concerned about safety and keeping costs low.

I would definitely go with something that is good on gas! My parents bought me a honda civic 4 years ago and it's great! The new ones are even better if you can swing a new one! I hope all is well!!!

Wow thank you all for the feedback!! Taking the time to write and offer good advice means a lot to me! When I get home from work tomorrow I will search this forum and start my car hunt.

Ive got a Nissan Altima and I swear by it! Its the best car I have ever owned-and I have owned some gas guzzlers! Its about 40 to fill up and it will go about 400 miles per tank.

Honda Civic. I put 103,000+ miles on it in 3 years and have had hardly any problems. It's great on gas and starts around $16K.
