I agree and I will be voting!! Everyone please vote YES... it will benefit the students, district, area, value of homes, teachers, sports programs etc.

It's a homerun all around for everyone!

I ALWAYS VOTE YES. I want to support the students - they have no say in this. Plus I have lots of friends who are school teachers who work very hard at what they do.

I always vote yes. Its not the teachers and students faults that administration often misuses the money.

Do you know in one of the Islip districts even if the budget passes they have to cut about 20 teachers?

In Patchogue right now I believe they cut out most sports and now Gabe is going here

Also, just so you know... Most teachers salaries do not change if the budget passes or fails. For example we have a 3 year contract. The services are taken from the children.

Re: Everyone VOTE today for your School Budget!

I'm sorry, JMHO but It's so unfair to vote no and punish the children-- not to mention that there are so many others that suffer from the budgets failing!

the last vote that was held the budget in a district near me got turned down-- i actually felt so ashamed. the kid's athletic program was completely cut-- they had NO sports program!! that is just disgusting! what are those kids going to be getting into if they are not doing sports and activities??-- coaches and organized activities have such positive influences on students. also, what about their physical fitness? and the same thing goes for the music programs!

i'm not going to get into a huge thing here- but it's such a small amount of money to ensure that the kids, school district, teachers, etc will be OK and benefit-- and continue to grow and improve. it's just not fair to them not to vote yes and be supportive.

ETA: the kid's sports program that got cut-- after that a bunch of parents got together and held a huge fundraiser to get the sports programs back and they were able to do it-- thank god. it wasn't the same program that they would have had if the budget passed but it was something-- this time, everyone rallied to support voting YES so that they won't have to do that again. why do we send kids to school if we have to have fundraisers so that they can have music/sports programs?! but i just wanted to add that positive outcome-- b/c i was happy that they got their programs back!!

smithtown-- very embarrassing to me!!! it's such a great district-- it should have never been turned down, idk what is going on but hopefully this year it gets cleared up and doesn't happen again!

i mean, to say that the people who live in our town don't have enough money to vote yes for the budget is insane-- and our kids have to go out and have 'car wash fundraisers' and auctions to get the money together?? when the average value of the houses in the area are around half a million dollars? something's wrong with that picture... i think it has a lot to do with a VERY large senior community we have in St. James-- b/c they are elderly and they don't have kids going to school in the district it seems they don't care and vote no a lot-- now, b/c there are so many of them that is why it gets turned down sometimes-- that's why every vote of people with kids IN the school counts-- b/c we are going up against a huge senior community... it was the only year that it ever was turned down like that so hopefully b/c of that, now people have realized and it wont happen again-- i'm glad it worked out in the end and they got the programs back. so that's the silver lining! i hope from now on we don't have these problems anymore.

I totally agree that school taxes are insane, but voting down the budget isnt the answer - because all they do is cut the extra programs - instead attend the board of ed meetings and hear how the money is really being spent and voice your objections.

Definitely vote yes! As most here have said, it really is the kids that suffer. I am in the Plainedge district and last year the budget was voted down. Well all the 'extra' programs were cut, most notably sports. Students and parents had to hold continuous fundraisers just to have a portion of their sports programs. Kids should not have to do this. The only good that has come out of this is that there is much more awareness of the budget vote. This year we are seeing signs everywhere to vote Yes. And that is exactly what I will be doing!

I think alot of school districts have had their budgets shot down for the first time in their history, but you can't blame taxpayesr either. People cannot afford to live here anymore. My parents taxes are $16,000 a year!! Whooever said that by voting yes to the budget would only cost an additional 30 cents a month is not completely accurate. I agree that our children's education is extremely important, but the way the money is being spent needs to be checked before another budget increase!

I always vote yes too. I am also a teacher and our budget did not pass last year and we were on a contingency budget this year. Next year though, if the budget fails tonight, the kids will really suffer-- no summer school, drivers ed, jv sports, marching band (they win the state championship every year), books, ap classes, talented and gifted program, plus a bunch of teachers will be cut too. It is a common misconception that the budget will hike up your taxes and that teachers make too much (which is the biggest load of bs I ever heard), but the budget has nothing to do with teachers' salaries. In my district the taxes would probably go up a couple of hundred dollars a year, which is nothing when you pay 10- 12k!Please vote everyone!!!!!

Re: Everyone VOTE today for your School Budget!

this is a tough issue.... I am a teacher and i am voting NO.... mainly because the taxes are getting absolutely INSANE. no one can afford to live here anymore. once me and FH get married, we have to leave LI because we can't afford a home here... it's not just the mortgage, it's the taxes too. my parents are 65 and can't afford to retire because they have to come up with over $10,000 a year in proprty taxes... it's not right.

i support the schools, i support the children, but i think the money can be much better managed. school districts all over the country can run their schools just as well with property taxes well under $3,000 a year or less. why can't long island??

Because alot of school districts in other states are not as good. In other states such as VA and NC all you have to do is pass one test to be a teacher, no education background needed - check out great schools.net - schools on LI the teachers are classifed under bach degree, masters degree, and doctorate. In other places, the schoolteacher are classified as Licensed, not licensed, and provionally licensed.

Re: Everyone VOTE today for your School Budget!

Actually your statement is not quite true. I lived in NC and you need to be certified. Due to the shortage of teachers they do hire 'some' teachers without any certification but there is an agreement that they have to get it.

Honestly, unless you are a homeowner, it is difficult to tell someone (who is actually going to pay for it!!!) what they should vote for.

YES...PLEASE GO AND VOTE!

It really really hurts the students when its voted down...and in my district....it was voted down and never put up again...and students raised $$$ to put on the school play
