I think alot of school districts have had their budgets shot down for the first time in their history, but you can't blame taxpayesr either. People cannot afford to live here anymore. My parents taxes are $16,000 a year!! Whooever said that by voting yes to the budget would only cost an additional 30 cents a month is not completely accurate. I agree that our children's education is extremely important, but the way the money is being spent needs to be checked before another budget increase!

it was me who made that statement, remember it's each town has their own budget, yours may be different. the one particurally that i am talking about has had their budget shot down more than once. If they don't get the budget passed this time the kids will not have the summer school programs, there will be no sports programs, and no band or after shcool activities.

For those of you that have children, you know how valuable those after school programs are to the kids. It helps them build resumes to get into good colleges, get internships, keeps them off the streets and out of trouble. It's more then just school supplies like Xerox paper and pencils your voting on your voting on the futures of the kids of YOUR community.

VOTE YES! I teach in a good district whose budget was voted down last year...and we are paying for it big time. The kids lost art classes, drivers ed, a tons of electives and clubs, not to mention busses.

They are paying for it big time! Please vote yes. If a budget fails year after year the cuts get more and more drastic, the kids suffer, the school suffers and pretty soon so does the value of your home!

VOTE YES!

this is a tough issue.... I am a teacher and i am voting NO.... mainly because the taxes are getting absolutely INSANE. no one can afford to live here anymore. once me and FH get married, we have to leave LI because we can't afford a home here... it's not just the mortgage, it's the taxes too. my parents are 65 and can't afford to retire because they have to come up with over $10,000 a year in proprty taxes... it's not right.

i support the schools, i support the children, but i think the money can be much better managed. school districts all over the country can run their schools just as well with property taxes well under $3,000 a year or less. why can't long island??

Property taxes are made up of many things not just the school budget, they are based on the amount of property you own, town taxes, sanitation amoung other things, if your taxes go up dramatically you can't say' o wait it b/c the school budget was passed now i have to pay an extra 2K', b/c thats not entirly true, yes they may go up but there are other things factored into that as well.

I think the budget system needs to be modified. The tax burden needs to be divided equally between homeowners having all the burden to pay for every children on LI and the parents of the children.

I would love to pay and have all the cash in the World but we just can't afford a constant increase in the tax.

I understand that kids need the extra curriculum activities and it is not fair to them. But a lot of people complaining about the budget are not even contributing to it.

as i sign off for the day.

When looking for a new home, one of the things people look into are the schools thinking one day they may have children.

It does matter, the children do matter, the budget does matter.

VOTE YES.

Actually your statement is not quite true. I lived in NC and you need to be certified. Due to the shortage of teachers they do hire 'some' teachers without any certification but there is an agreement that they have to get it.

Honestly, unless you are a homeowner, it is difficult to tell someone (who is actually going to pay for it!!!) what they should vote for.

If they are hiring ANY teachers w/out ceritifcation, thats too many. Even if they have to get their certificaiton within a certain time, do you want your child to have an unlicensed teacher?

and in my research i have found in some high schools 1/3rd of the teachers arent licesned...and yes maybe they have to get their license, but its much easier to get than in NY.

My sister has an athletic training degree, moved to VA, and is a gym teacher. all she had to do was take the test, which she said was like the SAT. She has no educational training at all.

You cannot compare. They don't even make the salaries of NY.

Masters degree, 25 year experience. Income in a Jr HS is high $40s.

Tell that to a NY teacher. They would be laughing.

well of course they arent going to make as much - the cost of living is significantly less.

im just saying that if people are complaining that school taxes are too much, and that in other places taxes are way less, that it may be because a portion of the teachers arent even certified.

Under No Child Left Behind it is illegal to hire a teacher without the necessary credentials.

Agree, my parents school taxes went up 55% last year, and now they're getting closer to 20K a year now. We didn't even bother voting today..it always passes anyway. There is a for sale sign on every corner.

and credientials are different from state to state - again, my sister has no teaching experience (never student taught) all she had to do was take on certifiying exam, which she said a 12 year old could pass..

Yes, but then she has to get her education degree in a specified time frame....Actually schools in North Carolina are doing well....They also have state exams and are passing, and seem to be recieved some awards of excellence too. Would you rather your child have no teacher or one who is getting their degree as they teach?

she DOES NOT have to get her education degree. she has absolutely no plans in going back to school - I belive she had to take an online class or two, but thats it.

From your post, your sister is in VA not NC. Yet, you are generalizing and including another state. The statement above about doing it within a time frame is accurate.

It still does not justify why some people are paying for schools while other who have children do not. The root problem is that not enough people are paying for schools. Only a selected few who own houses. Then you have a bunch of corrupted school executives who just use it for their personal use.

I still don't think anyone who is not contributing to the budget can tell someone who is not, what they should vote for.

You also have to remember that some school districts are at a severe disadvantage because they do not receive as much state aid as other districts, and therefor have to have higher taxes in order to run a decent school district... also, some areas do not have as much commerial areas in their district that contribute to school taxes... that hurts a lot of districts as well...

you say 'it does not justify why some people are paying for schools while others are not' - taxes are a part of home ownership, plain and simple. if you dont want to pay taxes, don't buy a house.

my original post was to get the idea out that if these budgets get voted down, the ONLY people who are hurt are the kids. and teachers who now have bigger class sizes. If you dont want to vote, or want to vote no to your budget go right ahead, its a free country.

and yes my sister is in VA, however my FH looked into schools in NC and thats what he was told too. Maybe things have changed since then.

and i was replying to a post about how come taxes are so much lower in other areas - on greatschools.net you can see the level of passing and teachers education.

i would rather have someone with a doctorate degree teaching my child than someone who is not licenced 'yet'

that is just my opinion...

eta: and I never said NC schools were BAD, i jsut said that they have teachers that arent licensed....again just from my research...
sr081906 Posted:

Re: Everyone VOTE today for your School Budget!

I don't have a problem paying taxes but it is 'easy' for people who are not paying for taxes to say to just raise it.

Teachers are licenced in NC. Just 'some' positions are sometimes open and they must fill them so 'some' teachers will not be certified 'yet'. It happens in area in high demand.

and even though I don't own a home right now (which you just assumed), I plan on buying one next year and will be paying taxes then. and will be voting yes to school budgets then too.

and I saw what you added - do they hire teachers on LI without licences??? Not to my knowledge.

and some schools I checked in NC had 33% of teachers with no license, that is not just 'some' to me.
