Expensive dress I really like or cheaper dress I like??

Expensive dress I really like or cheaper dress I like??

Ok found a bridesmaid dress I really really like by Jordan. Found one that I love by Shelli Segal. The difference in the price is almost $150 for the one I love!! With alterations the dress would be almost 300!!

Is it too much to ask my girls to pay for?? The will also have to contribute significantly to my shower as my mom cannot help at all???

peeking in here on the '06 board.

IMO, $300 is a lot to ask your girls to spend when you consider they also have to buy shoes, accessories, a purse, chip in for your shower and or buy you a shower gift, take you for a bachlorette party and give you a wedding gift.

there are plenty of gorgeous dresses that cost 1/2 that.

Thats what I'm thinking!!

it is hard because i personally would spend that much since i never go shopping so splurging a little does not bother me. but other people might not feel the same, especially when they have to give you shower and wedding gifts...

so i think you should show both dresses to all your bridesmaids and see what they say. if someone has a problem with the expensive one, or if they like the cheaper one better, then you shouldn't get it.

Personally, I couldn't ask my BM's to spend that much on a dress. You have to also factor in the price for alterations, shoes, and hair and makeup if they are going to do that. I wouldn't even consider a $300 dress. Put yourself in their position... I know if I was a BM I would be very unhappy if I was expected to spend $300 on a dress. But, thats JMO.

I really wouldn't want to spend that much on a dress. But it depends on your girls, show them both to your BMs and see what they think.

Do it first without telling how much either one is, then tell them the price difference and see how they react. If they don't mind spending more then go for it.

But either way don't pressure them, just be happy that they're there for you. It's about the girls, not the dress, so let them decide.

I wouldn't ask my girls to spend that much. If I did fall in love with a dress that was very expensive, I would first see if I could find a similar style from another manufacturer.

If I absolutely LOVED the expensive BM dress and was SO set on having it, I would personally fork over the difference or at least a good portion of it (but I would REALLY have to love a dress to want to do this).

Honestly yeah, unless you are willing to help them out with half of the cost then is too much to ask for them. look around online and maybe you can find the dresses for less. good luck.

i think $300 is too much to ask a bm to pay. and there are plenty of pretty dresses out there that are $150.

Wow, I've paid that kind of money for BM dresses. I never once thought of the cost factor, I just associated it with accepting the BM position. In all honesty, I wouldn't care, if I was a BM for someone, it means that they mean a lot to me, and money was never a factor. Maybe I should have spoken up at the time! LOL

But I agree with showing both dresses to you girls and see what they say. If you REALLY want them to wear that dress, then you should pitch in for the cost if it's too much for them to handle.

This is exactly why I'm letting my girls pick their own style of dress, I just pick the fabric and color!

Yes it's expensive but that is what weddings are about IMO. I am in my friend's wedding this month and I am paying about that after alteration and all these estras she wants done. That is not including shoes, pocketbook and accessories. Plus I paid money for her shower and we are having a bachelorette party. Unfortunately things are expensive. So to me 300.00 is about right. If you really love it than I would see how they feel.
Good Luck!!!

That's a lot to ask for when it will most likely be worn once. They will have expenses beyond the dress.

All seem fine with it and they tried on both dresses and like the more expensive one better. Its me that feels like its too much to ask!! But I really really like the less expensive dress just i love the more expensive one!!

I was in the same exact situation. So funny because the dress I picked out is by Shelli Segal & it is running around the same price as you mentioned. (I wonder if we both picked out the same dress )

I would just show my bridesmaids both dresses & let them decide. Cost is an issue for many people and thats something you have to take into consideration.

Lots of luck. Which dress is it btw????

I think it's a lot. There are sooo many BM dress designers who make dresses that look similar for less. If you really have your heart set on it you could offer to help a little.

I agree...$300 is alot to ask someone to spend. I am sure they will appreciate spending 1/2 that instead

I would give the girls the option! Get the decision off of you.

P.S. THANK YOU for finally getting that yummy looking cake out of your avatar. That was SO unfair!

Can you afford to help them pay for their dresses? Not sure how many BMs you have, or if you can afford the extra $, but if you can kick in an extra $50-$100 it may go a long way. A friend of mine did this for her wedding, and all the girls were fine with it.

You also know them better than us - what are their expenses like? Do they have familes, mortgages, good salaries where they would have extra disp income? Can you confide in your MOH?

GOOD LUCK!
