My fiance's cousin is getting married next month. The ceremony is 2-3. The cocktail hour/reception starts at 6pm.
Why a 4-hour gap between start times? It's seems extremely inconvenient for the guests. There is literally no place to go for 3 hours.

well they may not start the ceremony on time and it may run overtime so hopefully that will eat up some of the 4 hours...i feel you i don't know why couple's do that to their guests...
Sometimes there really is no choice!

Re: Explain this to me?
We may have no choice in when our receptions begin, but we do have a choice as to what time of day they are.
Meaning, if you know your ceremony is only possible in the morning or early afternoon, you COULD schedule a morning ceremony with a day time reception. But people CHOOSE to have an evening reception, hence the large gaps.
I know I'll get flamed for this, but I agree that it is rude to OOT guests to have a large gap in time between church and reception. I also think it is rude to not go to the church. So, in going to both, if you are from OOT and can't go home to change, you are looking at one looooong day.
It is most convenient for the bride and groom to have a large gap, but not for guests. Just my opinion.
