We are on an extremely tight budget and I just had a quick question regarding day of tips:
If the hall is charging you 17% tax and GRATUITIES, why are we expected to tip?
Aren’t gratuities a tip already?

Re: extremely tight budget
Well... alot of places call it a 'service charge' to avoid calling it the same thing as a tip and technically it's not supposed to be. But generally, the 'tip' goes to the maitre'd who handles your affair.
Why? *shrug* Because they can't possibly come up with another way to brutally ROB brides of MORE money than they already do by charging their exhorbitant ridiculous prices?? Because they are greedy? That's my guess....
But remember a tip is a tip. By definition, it should be optional and only given if earned.

Re: extremely tight budget
OK so here is another question.
For most vendors their job is over at the end of the night and you know how they preformed. For the Photo and video should you tip them at the end of the night or wait til you see there work?

totally ridiculous!
you know what else i noticed - they charge tax on top of the service fee. Is this the case for everyone else or should i bring it up w/ my hall?

I would certainly bring it up! They can't tax you on a service charge! I don't even know if a mandatory service charge is allowed, but we all accept it...

Re: extremely tight budget
Did your venue give you a guideline for tips? Mine suggests $3-$5 per guest (so if I have 200 guests it's between $600-$1000) for the Maitre'D. They also suggest about $200 for my Bridal Attendant.

Re: extremely tight budget
mine told us $2 a person for the maitre d. didnt mention anything about hte bridal attendent. \

Re: extremely tight budget
I think tax is added on top of the orig price plus service charge because services are taxable. I dont know if that made any sense what so ever, but for example at work we charge on top of a delivery fee because it is a service and its taxable by nystate.

I may be leaning toward the $3 a head if most are giving $1!

Re: extremely tight budget
I thought the 'service charge' went to the waiters and the bathroom people, bartender etc.. but then you had to tip the materd separate and the bridal attendant...
There is no shame in calling the hall and asking.. How much am I supposed to tip... what does the service charge/gratuity cover etc...

Oh my That's a lot of money. I know for sure, I don't have that kind of money to tip. Sorry!
I know that our banquet manager told me that we need to tip the maitre'd and bridal attendant.

My hall told us the Matrie'd has to share their tip with the people in the kitchen, I think. They recommened $100 for the bridal attendent. Our bridal attendant was really good, we gave her a little more.
Usually the hall does tell you what they recommend in tips. We were told at one of our last meetings.

Re: extremely tight budget
everything is so much $$$...i can't figure out where it is all going???? If your hall costs 100 pp and you are paying 17% gratuity with 150 people....your tip for the night is $2550.00. How many people could possibly be splitting this tip??? and then they want you to give an additional tip. Am i doing the math wrong??? where is that money going????

Re: extremely tight budget
My brother in law thought that was rediculous when he saw that from the NRC. He said it is a suggestion and we dont HAVE to do it?! But I know what you mean- it was on the paper what she wrote the price quote on and stuff.
