fake cake layers

Hey guys,

Watching WHose wedding is it anyway and heard of a really great tip.... Fake layers on the wedding cake. To save money but still get the dramatic height effect on the cake some on the layers are made of styrofoam! Its also a good idea if you are have fewer guests and you don't want the cake to look tiny. I think that is such a cool idea, as I want a really dramatic cake at twinkie prices!!!

Since I eat low carb (and NO sugar) my FH thinks I am going to try to get a low carb cake so he tells people we are having a styrofoam or cardboard cake.

That's a great idea! I wonder what the normal size of a cake that feeds 150 people looks like...I may need to post a new topic.

yes its a great idea...i also always tell people to do this when they want fondant but dont like how it tastes, they make only one layer real cake to cut into and the rest is styrofoam, and guests get served sheet cake from the back.

Their is definitely nothing wrong with that idea. I have seen that alot in bridal books. It saves alot on money.

Tons of cake decorators use that trick. Its awesome. When little susie whats a princess castle cake for her birthday, but you will only have 20 or 30 guests, you dont need a 2 foot tall cake with turrets and everything, but it still has to look like a castle. So often, certain parts are made from cake and certain parts are made from 'not cake' (Like for the turrets and stuff, a lot of times ice cream cones and other edible things are used). Cardboard is also used. Find the right size cardboard box, and place the cake on topf of it and when you cut the top layer its cake, even thought it looks like it is decorated all the way As long as you protect the food from touching the materials, it doesnt matter what you use... (i love making cakes like these LOL)

def check out how it looks and talk to the reception hall or bakery that is making your cake and ask if you can see what it looks like.
i think it's a good idea just make sure you go to cut into the actual cake

What do you guys think of the reception hall cakes? They look so plain to me when I browse online. I know that it's an extra expense, but is the bakery always better??

It depends on what you like. Alot of brides use the cakes that are provided by the caterer. You may be able to show a picture of cake you would like to have to the in house baker and see if they could replicate it. Others use an outside vendor. Do you have a bakery where you normally buy from? If so, inquire within to see if they make wedding cakes.

Well alot of RH's actually work with a bakery and get the cakes from there. Personally i am getting a cake from elsewhere bc the look i want the bakeries they use wont be able to duplicate

your reception hall should have a book for you to view of cakes and you can always do a tasting also DON'T FORGET even if you've been there before do a tasting.
you can always show them a pic of a cake you want and see what they can do.
i'm going through my reception hall for the cake.

Sorry I'm an '08 crashing in again but it's a really nice idea- I might suggest it to my RH and see what we can do.

what i want is very different, and they dont really do it, they do ALOT of cakes just not the type of thing i am looking for...so although they offer it i am going outside to get it. Some girls do this depending on what they're looking for
