Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

I don't know what to do about the father-daughter dance. My father passed away 2 years ago, my mother had suggested perhaps dancing with someone I feel close to. (We were not close to the remaining family from his side of the family, and my mother's side lives in the UK and wont be able to attend) It doesn't feel right to me, and I would prefer to skip it out-right.

I am a little worried that it may be awkward/seem weird to our guests if we just jump straight to the mother-son dance.

I attended one wedding where the mother and sister group danced with the bride, but my mother and sister said that it would be too emotional for them. Which I understand completely since I teared up just suggesting it.

Has anyone else had or attended a wedding where there was no dance? Is there something else that can be done? or a suggested way to just transition to the mother-son and gloss over the fact that we will not have the dance?

I am trying to make a bittersweet day a little bit easier on my mother, sister, and myself.

Thanks in advance.

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

I'm sorry about the loss of your dad. I saw a really cute video of a bride who lost her father. She danced with her brother and then, to her surprise, a number of male relatives and friends jumped in one at a time and danced with her for the remainder of the song. It was really beautiful to watch. Also, I have a cousin who's wife danced with her mom because her dad passed away. They began dancing a few seconds after my cousin started dancing with my aunt. Just two ideas for you. However, it is your wedding. I'm sure you're honoring him in other ways and if you don't feel comfortable with a dance, just don't do it. I don't think people will notice it or question it.

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

I am having the same issue.

My father is passed away (both my parents are gone) and my uncle - who I am very close to - is walking me down the aisle. That's fine, but I'm really not sure I want to do a dance with my uncle. I'm not sure I will be 'okay' during it and I really don't want the moment to be sad for anyone. I really want the day to be happy.

I also don't want to deny my fiance and his mom their own dance, so I was also considering having only their dance. I am leaning towards that option, to be honest.

I have been to a number of weddings where there were no parent-dances at all and it wasn't weird at all. I actually never watch the father-daughter dance - I make sure to leave the room - because it makes me too sad.

Whatever your choice is will be the 'right' one because it's your wedding. Go with your gut.

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

I am sorry for all your losses ladies. I won't be having a father daughter dance either, because I have no relationship with my father. We will be having a mother son dance though. I don't think its weird at all to have one and not the other, every family situation is different, I doubt that anyone will think anything of it. Best of luck to you all.

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

My father passed away 5 years ago - one of his best friends is giving me away. I'll either dance w my brother or skip it entirely and just let FH and FMIL dance

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

We skipped both parents dances (my husband's mother is a piece of you-know-what and didn't even come to the wedding). My dad's been gone a number of years now, and no one even noticed the dances missing.

This is the same for me! It's your wedding, do it how you want.

Father Daughter Dance Dilemma

I think whatever you feel comfortable with will be fine by your guests. I have heard some girls dance with their FH instead after/before he dances with his mom. As you get closer your opinion might change - do what feels right to you - whether that be skipping or dancing with someone else. No one can make that decision for you and as a guest, I wouldn't even think anything of it.

Same here, we won't be doing any of the dances (my father passed away last year and FH mother is out of the picture) I dont think anyone will notice, you do what feels right for you.
