Hi girls, its me again! Can you anyone tell me whether or not they think, 'Through The Years' by Kenny Rogers is appropriate as a father/daughter dance. My FMIL says she thinks it is more of a man/woman song. Please be honest. My dad is my StepDad and he raised us THROUGH THE YEARS!

Lyrics attached... I think your FMIL may be right...
Of course its your opinion that matters most -- but since you asked for honest opinions... having read the lyrics (below) it does seem more like a 50th anniversary husband-wife song to me... But I'm probably the only person who pays any attention to lyrics!
And this may also be taking lyrics too seriously, but I find this song to almost imply a closer relationship with your Dad then your husband-to-be...
Through The Years
(Steve Dorff/M. Panzer)
I can't remember when you weren't there
When I didn't care for anyone but you
I swear we've been through everything there is
Can't imagine anything we've missed
Can't imagine anything the two of us can't do
Through the year, you've never let me down
You turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you ... Through the years
I've never been afraid, I've loved the life we've made
And I'm so glad I've stayed, right here with you
Through the years
I can't remember what I used to do
Who I trusted whom, I listened to before
I swear you've taught me everything I know
Can't imagine needing someone so
But through the years it seems to me
I need you more and more
Through the years, through all the good and bad
I knew how much we had, I've always been so glad
To be with you ... Through the years
It's better everyday, you've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you
Through the years
Through the years, when everything went wrong
Together we were strong, I know that I belonged
Right here with you ... Through the years
I never had a doubt, we'd always work things out
I've learned what love's about, by loving you
Through the yearss
Through the years, you've never let me down
You've turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you ... Through the years
It's better everyday, you've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you
Through the years!

Really, unless you write one yourself, you aren't going to find a song that is a little bit off from the reality of the situation. Going by your post and your comment that your step-dad raised you THROUGH THE YEARS (all caps!), it seems like this song means something to you and most likely your step-dad. I say do it!!! My dad and I are going to dance to Unforgettable. That to me is clearly a 'man/woman' song, but my dad and I love it and we occassionally dance in the kitchen while singing it for no apparent reason! I wouldn't trade that for Butterfly Kisses for any amount of money! Tell your FMIL that she and her son can pick their song, but you and your step-dad are choosing yours. That seems fair.

You are absolutely right!
I love Unforgetable, we just heard that last night. What a beautiful song. I think I will stick with Through the Years, we are both Kenny Rogers fans (don't laugh), so it fits perfectly!
So how are you doing? When is your date again?

Father/Daughter Song
I think the song is great for Father/Daughter dance. If its want you want use it. no song is going to fit perfectly if you listen to every single word.
I think the song fits, when people see a father and daughter dancing to it, thats what they will think of.

What I chose
I was sooo torn about a Father/Daughter song because my Dad has not always been there for me and although he loves me, our relationship is not Butterfly Kisses at all. I was in the car one day and heard Tim McGraw (yes I love country music)'Grown Men Don't Cry'. My Dad will cry the whole day, I just know it. But it really reflected my feelings and I love the last few lines. It is a traditional Daddy's Little Girl- no but that is okay too. You should dance to the song that has meaning for you.

I would say like 75% of those lyrics sound perfect for father/daughter, if you like the song just do it - good luck!!

This choice of song is about what you want to honor your stepdad. If most of the lyrics seem appropriate, especially the main part of the song, I say go for it. Your guests will not be sitting there analyzing the song to figure out if it was written about a couple or not. Some of these decisions can be so overanalyzed, and you will see it`s a non-event (not the dance, the wondering about the lyrics) I think it is a very nice song.

Out of the 100 or so weddings I have attended, 95 of them used 'Through the Years' (ok, so I'm exaggerating about the # of weddings I've attended, hahaha) - I actually associate that song as a father/daughter dance at this point - and I never get tired of it...it chokes me up EVERY time (especially now that my father is gone)...I definitely think you should use it! Good luck!

I have also seen it done as a mother-son dance at weddings. As the other ladies have said, do what feels right for you. The majority of your guests will not analyze the song (although as we all know some will-but who cares?).I say if it makes you happy go for it!
Continued success to all...

I agree with the others!
How many couples have you heard of that use 'Because You Loved Me' by Celine Dion? Or Marc Anthony's 'My Baby You'? Both obvious parent/child songs! It's your day choose whatever you like! Have Fun!

It's great
Your step by stood through you, I'm sure he hugged and kissed you and supported you when you had tears, I analyzed the lyrics and I think it's fine. In fact perfect. Good luck telling your FMIL your decision. I'm sure she'll come around and realize it's perfect for you and your dad.
