I lost my father when I was 13, 20 years ago. Monday would have been his 62nd birthday. I just got back from the cemetery and I balled the whole way home thinking about how he is going to be so missed at my wedding. How are you ladies going to deal with this on your wedding day? I know I am going to ball but how am I ever going to stop? I get choked up thinking about it.

Re: Fatherless brides
My father was abusive when we were little so he has been out of the pic for a long time, and I lost my mom to cancer. My sisters are walking me down, but I know how you feel. I am gonna try not to cry because I am afraid I won't be able to stop either. I am just gonna keep focusing on the fact that I know my mom would want me to be HAPPY on my wedding day, not sad, and that she will be with me in spirit, watching us, and..this might sound stupid, but I know it would make her feel bad if she knew I was crying at my wedding because she wasn't there...like it was her fault. When she first found out she had brain cancer I cancelled my trip to arizona to be in my best friend's wedding and my mother cried because she felt bad, I told her not to, and eventually she said she would have done the same thing...but at first she felt REALLY bad. So, everytime I start to get teary eyed I am gonna try to picture my mom yelling at me to be happy cause it's my wedding day, and she will still be there with us...hopefully that will help. Maybe you could try to think like that too

Re: Fatherless brides
I don't have any family. I don't know my mother...don't know if she's alive or dead, only know her name because it's on my birth certicate. My father passed away when I was 6, didn't really know him either. My father's mother who raised me passed away when I was 13.. Then I bounced around in state care and friend's houses. Whatever family is left is as good as dead to me. My maid of honor's (my friend but we say we're sisters) husband is going to walk me down the aisle.I'm thinking of putting my grandmother's pic in a frame in my bo-k and maybe finding a way to honor her at my wedding. Not sure how yet.

I know how you feel. My dad died 6 years ago. My sister died 5 years ago and it will be one year since my mom died on Wednesday. I miss them SO much it aches... but I have to believe that they WILL be there with me. Somehow.
Your dad will be with you. Believe it and you will feel it.

Re: Fatherless brides
i don't have a father.
my grandpa was supposed to walk me down the aisle and dance with me, but he passed away 7 months before my wedding. i spent the last half hour of my reception bawling my eyes out.
i walked down the aisle and danced with my mom, which was great. i know my grandparents were there in spirit
My dad passed away 10 years ago. I am walking down the aisle by myself, I know he will be there by my side. I will be lighting a candle for him and his picture will be next to it.
I've cried so much about it, but I'm sure I'll cry some more that day. I know that he's watching and he's happy for me.

Re: Fatherless brides
I cry everythime I think about it my wedding. MY father passed away almost 10 years ago. We are having a memorial candle for him and instead of doing the traditional father/daughter we I am trying to talk my mom into dancing with me.
ETA: my mom is walking me down the aisle hopefully with my brother. And mom is afraid of balling her eyes out during the dance and not being able to finish it.

Re: Fatherless brides
I just went to a wedding where the bride's father had passed away. She walked down the aisle halfway alone, then her husband came and got her and they walked the rest of the way to the alter together. I thought it was the sweetest thing i have ever seen!

My Father passed away almost 10-years ago. I know exactly how you are feeling because I have always vision my Wedding Day and my Father walking me down the isle, dancing in front of everyone, etc...
Thank god I have an amazing family and even though my Father will not physically be there, I know he will be there in spirit.
My Mother is walking me down the isle and the spotlight dance I will be dancing with both of my brothers.
PS - We are date twins also, so I know both of our Fathers will be with us

Re: Fatherless brides
My grandma passed away last July and I miss her everyday! She gave me her mothers engagement ring before she passed away and my FH put that diamond in a new setting and he gave me that. I know she is with me all the time and I know she is helping me plan my wedding because every desicion I make I think 'Would Grandma have wanted this..?' I know it's gonna hurt once the wedding day comes and she isn't there, but I know she is there in spirit and she is always going to be in my heart

Re: Fatherless brides
Oh my gosh, just the title of this thread is depressing.
Well, I do not have a relationship with my biological father (which is for the best), but I always considered my stepfather (who married my mom when I was 4) my real Dad. Unfortunately, he passed away almost three years ago. Wow, can't believe it's three years. The walking down the aisle thing has been an issue...part of me feels that my mom should do it but I worry about how she'd handle it emotionally. And there's a part of me that really likes the idea of walking down the aisle alone, but not really alone- just thinking of my Dad beside me. I feel that he is the only one who is meant for that job. I will probably carry his wedding ring and give it to my mom when she meets me to give me away at the altar. Otherwise, I would have to decide between my two brothers in law, whom I'm very close to, to walk me down the aisle. I would hate to choose. So I kinda like this idea!!
What I'm dreading though- is deciding what to do about the dance. It's just too sad to even think of doing that since my Dad is not there, but I might just dance with FH's dad, whom I adore. But just the concept of it makes me....
I totally feel your pain though...it's so hard to have this amazing day and not have those you love most with you. It also tears my heart out that FH's brother can't be there either. He was killed by a drunk driver when he was 22 and FH was about 16.
Just imagine your Dad smiling, as if he was there. You'll get through it, I promise!!! But I totally understand what you're going through.

Re: Fatherless brides
Timing of this post is amazing.
My father passed away 15 years ago. I remember thinking back then that I would have to walk myself down the aisle as nobody could take his place. I found a great way of having him with me that day though - I bought a small picture frame for his picture and my florist will attach it to my bouquet.
I thought I was doing pretty well until just the other day I had to find a picture for the frame.... I've been terribly upset since.
I've got less than a week to go and I am not sure how I will be on my wedding day. But I know he will be with me in spirit .

Re: Fatherless brides
I know its very hard... I lost both of my parents 3 months apart. Its been 20 years. My wedding will be a very happy & sad day... I'm still contemplating if my older brother will walk me down the isle. I do have other people who could, but I may just walk alone.
