Anyone not doing favors? I'm tossing around the idea of making a donation to the American Cancer Society but FH says ppl will want to receive a favor. Just wanted to know if donations are a common thing to do.

I'm sorry to hear that. Another thing is that I don't want ppl asking during the wedding why charity and why this one? .
Usually, a description/explanation of the charity you have chosen is provided to the guests to explain, so I dont think that people will be asking about it....they will be thinking about how beautiful the newly married couple is!!

my dad died from a heart a attack and battled with diabetes. I don't think it will make it a sad event. I think my whole side of the family would rather the money go to a good cause int he name of my father than some cheap favor they aren't going to use.....
oh i totally agree it is a personal preference and im not giving out cheap favors
ETA i would rather give / get no favor than a cheap, useless one
yea...my mom is against the donation thing....so its my battle...my favor will be at least $10 if I give one.....
sorry, didn't mean to imply your favors would be cheap

WoW! that's a lot of money. I don't want to spend over $3 on favors. FH actually wanted to give out small plants because it symbolizes life.

I can totally relate to you because my dad died of cancer and FH's dad died of a heart attack How can I chose one charity over another?
im so sorry i mean, some people want the remembrance FH chose not to on that day again, personal preference
however, everyone that is giving a donation always uses the word 'cheap' along with favor i never said donations were cheap i said i wasnt doing it
not all favors are cheap and useless
I dont think its fair for people to assume that favors are cheap.....because they are not always.....i thinks its a generaliztion people make.

I love that idea! I have seen people give seeds as a favor for people to plant when they get home.....very affordable too!

maybe i'm sinister or jaded but i also think that people could write that they made a donation, but how do you really know that they did it??

Re: Favors vs. donations
We are still deciding as well... But I think we are doing a donation to a charity that hits home to us... And we are doing a favor... Money is very tight but I want to do the donation and FH wants to do a favor so we will do both... But whatever the favor is, cant be expensive... And the donation isnt going to be huge but any amount helps...

actually most places you can make donations to provide you with something to give to your guests, be it a scroll or card and I believe some you can even look online....not sure though. In my case, I'm pretty sure people trust that we area actually donating.
I do see where your coming from cause of course you can say your donating and not, keeping the extra $ for yourself

Re: Favors vs. donations
we are have a donation table. the guests have the option to have us make a donation in their name to one of 5 organizations FH and I hold very dear to our hearts. we are setting on a box for each one and they can put their placecards into the box of their choice. it also allow them to make their own donations if they want.
with each placecard they will be getting a personalized CD as a favor. FH and i are going to make them. they are going to feature all of the highlighted songs of the evening: the BP entrance, first dance, anniversary dance, cake cutting, garter and bo-k toss, wedding song, video montage songs, etc.

Re: Favors vs. donations
My opinion on donation favors
I do not see why the bride and groom have to show everyone that they donate to charity....instead of giving a favor.
It doesnt make any sense to me
I believe when you do something good for others whether it be donating your time or your money, it should be from the heart...not in lieu of a favor.
Me and FH donate money all year long to the cancer society and puppymill rescue Its our business, and i dont think its appropriate to have everyone know what we do with our money. JMO

Re: Favors vs. donations
I have been told that we need to give a favor cus people expect them. My sister didn't give a favor and no one even noticed. I think donations are much more appreciated. Most people throw the favors away and it ends up being a waste of money.
I think FH and I are doing a donation and then his aunt is making brigadegush (spelling?) its a brazxillian candy. And we will have a tray of them for each table. Im doubting anyone will care that they didn't get a favor.

Re: Favors vs. donations
we are doing both.. diabetes is RAMPANT in my family as well as fh's family.. part of the reason why we've opted out of the candy bar.. my dad passed from complications of the disease.. i choose to utilize my wedding to acknowledge his memory and to donate to a charity whose research may one day eradicate the disease so no one else ever has to know the pain that my family feels from his loss.
it is NOT about me wanting people to know that i give to charity.. no more than giving a favor is about people wanting to know that i have the money to give a favor. like snowflake said it's about personal preference..
that being said.. i personally think most favors while not cheap (because nothing is cheap in 2007/2008) are useless.. i've said it before and i stand by it.. from a plant to a mug, to a cookie.. useless.. TO ME.. but..
(insert hypocritical point here)
i'll be giving one anyway.. two actually instead of doing a donation to the ADA and getting the scrolls which I wouldn't use anyway.. i'm going to buy a bunch of those silicon bracelets that say ADA on them.. attach them to a memory card for my dad..
and i'm also giving a traditional favor.. my family likes wine.. my mom likes the wine favors.. so we're going to do that as well. totally useless, not cheap, and folks will prob not drink them unless they get real desperate one night and there is not hing else in their homes that can get them tipsy real fast. and depending on how my mom is feelng *with her purse that is* we may give somethig else.. the wine favors were her idea.we did them for my eparty and everyone loved them.. .

Re: Favors vs. donations
i feel donation favors are just perfect. We didn't do it because our wedding had a specific theme both of us wanted to carry through. I was thinking we could of donated to a irish cause but i felt if i would do a donation it would be for animals or natural preservation. Most of the favors you get at a wedding are crap anyway and through it out, should do donations more often.
