Favors vs. donations

Favors vs. donations

Anyone not doing favors? I'm tossing around the idea of making a donation to the American Cancer Society but FH says ppl will want to receive a favor. Just wanted to know if donations are a common thing to do.

although they are somewhat cocmmon, i am not in 'favor' of the idea, unless it is also accompanied by a favor

we are donating to the american cancer research society. I am also giving a small box that has a few chocolates and a tag that explains the donation. IMO I think people would appreciate the donation more then getting something that they may never use. sorry to offend anyone JMO

I'd like to do both but it all comes down to money. If it was anybody else I would do it my way, but it's also FH's wedding too so I'm torn.

I did a donation at my wedding. No favors...just the scrolls saying that we donated money. I got A LOT of compliments from a lot of people because we donated to a charity that has a lot of meaning to us. I personally think that a donation is a wonderful idea because half of your guests wont even take their favor home with them, and that's wasted money that a charity could have used. It's all a matter of personal preference. But I wouldn't be too worried about your guests being upset that they're not going home with a favor because you're already giving them this wonderful party and dinner.

everyone has their opinions

ive been to weddings and gotten no favor, useless favors, edible favors, useful favors

personally, i donate to lots of charities throughout the year, and i choose not to use my wedding as a forum for that

fortunately, i havent lost anyone to a disease of anything, although my mom has Lupus and my father had prostate cancer - i can understand why someone who has suffered a loss would want to acknowledge this

in my opinion, i would rather give something to my guests as my way of thanking them

Re: Favors vs. donations

my guests cant NOT take the favor home
they will be passed out at the end of the night or while they are getting cake

they will not be on the tables when they enter the room

they are in gift bags so they would be too large to keep on the tables

You're absolutelyright, I don't need to associate a donation with my wedding. Plus it will bring back too many bad memories. Thank you, I think I know what to do now.

Re: Favors vs. donations

I am thinking of making a donation and giving out godiva chocolates...

either I will give a favor or do both...not just a donation......

I just don't want to give out a favor that most people don't want or won;;t use.....

if I had a penny for every favor I threw out I would be rich.....

No offense...but when some girls post their pics of favors I look at them like...I would def get rid of that if I got it as a gift......

its a hard decision......BUT I do believe guests need to leave with something in hand...not just a piece of paper about a donation

I wanted to give a little something also, but not take too much away from the donation. We got individually wrapped chocolates from price club (they are these toffee almond things) and i found little boxes online for about 12$ for 100. I put them all together and used grosgrain ribbon to dress them up. I think in the end we spent under 1$ per box and will donate at least 1000$ to the charity.

FH's mother is in a nursing home
she is 53 and dying of diabetes and a stroke
totally incapacitated

i asked him if he wanted to do a donation just to see how he felt since it's his mother
he said he wanted to be happy and not have people thinking about why his mother isnt there

I personally will like to make a donation but FH wants to do a favor. I will still make a donation but it will have to be after the wedding.

I think the donations are a great idea. Not everyone keeps favors, which is why I was very very particular in not giving out something that was going to money wasted! We did choose to do a favor, but a donation is the gift that keeps on giving. I want my MOH to use Brides Against Breast Cancer as the organization for donations to go to for my bridal shower!

My sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer (at 35 years old) so I definitely wanted to acknowledge it! I know it will mean alot to everyone there because they all know what she has been through. I can understand not wanted to bring back bad memories, but often it can bring back good ones as well, remembering those you've lost and 'honoring' them with the donation.

my dad died from a heart a attack and battled with diabetes. I don't think it will make it a sad event. I think my whole side of the family would rather the money go to a good cause int he name of my father than some cheap favor they aren't going to use.....

I'm sorry to hear that.
Another thing is that I don't want ppl asking during the wedding why charity and why this one? .

im so sorry
i mean, some people want the remembrance
FH chose not to on that day
again, personal preference

however, everyone that is giving a donation always uses the word 'cheap' along with favor
i never said donations were cheap
i said i wasnt doing it

not all favors are cheap and useless
