Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

I may have posted about this before, but, I'll get into it again.
I have a SEVERE fear of flying. So much so, that it has prevented me from booking my Honeymoon. Mind you, I am getting married in 3 weeks. My fiancee is semi mad at me bc I won't pick somewhere to go. I'm mad at myself and no matter how many times I look at the stats online for flying safety it never makes me feel any better. My problem is that I am a MASSIVE control freak. I feel that unless if I am flying the plane myself, I won't feel relaxed or safe.
Am I a total freak? Hehe. Does anyone but myself have this problem? If so, please tell me how you cope with it. Because I know that the second I book a flight that is all I'm going to obsess about between now and then.

Re: Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

no problems with flying but I am weird and cant be in the passenger seat when someone else drives, well very few people. Some people I REFUSE to get in the car with them at any cost, then very few i will but the whole time i am so nervous, my heart is beating so fast and i am scared for my life. Its funny bc when i drive i am fine and i am an aggressive driver and dont have fear.

Have a few drinks, that will help your nerves. Or maybe take something to fall asleep right away like tylenol PM

i know you hear this all the time probably, and not sure if it will help but like they say, you are more likely to get into an accident driving than something happening while flying.

Did you look up info on fear of flying, sometimes they have books and info on this that can help.

I have. I just have OCD and I freak easily over things that I really have no control over. Most of the time I'm perfectly fine, but when I do freak out over things, it's big time. Like the flying thing. Usually when I'm up in the air, I'm ok. It's getting me on the plane that's the hard part. My FH says I'm an embarassment. LOL. He's right. If you would see me in an airport you would think that someone had murdered someone right in front of me bc I'm usually in hysterics. It's really quite pathetic. The last time I flew I had to have my doctor give me Valium. And that was to go to Florida.

Re: Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

It's funny, I grew up in a family that traveled a lot since my mom is from Argentina and we went there every other year. I was fearless as a child, never afraid of flying and so excited to go on trips, planes, etc. The older I got the more afraid of flying I got. When I was 13 I flew to France on Flight 800 one week after it went down. It was pretty crazy. The security that time was worse than I have ever seen it, including anytime after 9/11. The plane was virtually empty, and they canceled that flight permanently like a month later. Today I fly for work at least twice per year to Vegas. Every time I get on the plane I fear that I'm going to die. Take-off and landing are the worst, since I know that those are the times when things can go wrong most. Since I have to fly a lot, I have to deal with it somehow. I take Valium. I highly suggest seeing a doctor and getting a prescription for it when you fly. I take the prescribed dosage and just breathe. I take the meds as soon as I get to my seat. Then I close my eyes and breathe as best I can. You will be ok!!! A lot of people have this fear, and have to fly often. Let yourself enjoy your honeymoon...You really deserve it!!!

Do you guys like skiing? Maybe you could forget the flying and instead drive up to Vermont and go to a beautiful cozy resort....skiing during the day, fireplaces....

Hey! I have the exact same problem as you. I have an extreme fear of flying as well. I never had a problem with flying until 3 years ago when we had a bad flight. Very bumpy..bad landing etc. I have not flown since then. My fiance really wants to go to Mexico for the HM and I have been trying to talk him into driving to Florida but he is not having it. He doesn't want to spend half the trip driving and I can't really blame him. I don't know what we are going to do. I am just afraid that I will book a flight and then the day we have to leave have a major panic attack and back out and then what will we do... I just don't want be obsessing about flying and ruin my wedding day. Anyway...just wanted to let you know I can totally sympathize with you...You're not alone!! LOL

I hate flying as well, now I have to do it like once a month for work so its not an option to have panic attacks anymore. International flights are where i really spaz. My advice--dont sleep the night before and take valium. You'll be borderline comatose!

I have a friend who has a fear of flying. She has tried both hypnosis and medication. The hypnosis she said didnt work (then again, it might depend on who you go to), but the medication worked better for.

I have a fear of flying also...I plan on taking a sedative of some kind about a half hour before we get on the plane, nothing so strong that i dont know whats going on, but strong enough where i can make it through take off and landing...

I w as just going to post the same. i am deathly afraid of flying but that is not going to stop me from going on my HM. Whenever i fly I go to the Dr and get a low dose sedative. It helps. Try it and enjoy your HM

If you REALLY can't do it, if it is indeed a phobia then maybe you should consider taking a train to Florida and taking a cruise for your honeymoon.

If it s a serious phobia, you may need to go to therapy to help you with it, and now is not the time to do that. There are some great cruises that leave from Florida.

Good luck!

I also have a really bad fear of flying. I am planning on taking medication for our honeymoon to get me on the plane and be calm....just looking at planes freaks me out!!!

Also... whats the difference between taking xanax or valum? I wondering which one I should ask for that would help me be calm.... I dont want to be passed out- but I dont want to freak out either..

Re: Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

i had the same problem. i haven't flown since 2001.... September 10 to be exact! we almost just went to the poconos or something close. then my friends convinced that i will be missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity. so we booked our honeymoon to Aruba. which was about 5 hrs.

i did get a prescription for xanax but didn't need it. we flew out the very next morning after our wedding so i was too tired to even think about it. coming home i was fine too. i took a tylenol pm & was out cold.

you have to face your fears to get over them. just bring alot of reading material or a portable DVD player to keep your mind off it.

good luck !

Re: Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

I'm ok once I get up in the air. I'm just one of those people that is a fatalist. I always think 'it's gonna be me'. And I obsess. Like, it will literally be all that I think about between now and the day that I leave. I'll be thinking 'well, what if this happens, what if that happens'. It occupies my thoughts and drives me up a wall.
My doctor suggested therapy. I think it's something I may need to look into eventually.

Xanax is the only way I can fly it is a wonder pill I take it on the way to the airport and I am in la la land by the time I get on the flight. works everytime. My fear is claustropobia and knowing that I cant get off the plane and the Xanax is perfect for me. Good luck

Maybe I'll ask my DR about that. I'm not claustrophobic but it's kinda in the same vein. I don't like being in situations where I can't get out of or that I'm not in control in.

Re: Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

omg i am like this too. my mom is petrified to fly so my whole entire life we never went anywhere that required us to fly. then my brother, his wife & 3 kids moved to florida & the only way to go to my nephews birthday was to fly. so my sister booked the tickets & didn't tell me. the day we were suppose to leave she called FH, had him pack my bag & picked me up from work. when we got to the airport she made me take something over the counter (don't remember what) so i wouldn't get nauseas.

the flight was delayed for about 6 hours because of bad weather & i cried in the airport the entire time. seriously i was 22 years old & crying like a baby. once we got into the air i was so happy that she forced me to go.

its just the anticipation. i realized at that moment that if i didn't go i would never go any place for the rest of my life. (especially on a honeymoon). i also don't want to pass the same fears onto my children & then prevent them from doing things during their life.

so in my opinion, book where you want to go & just take some medication. a honeymoon is a once in a lifetime experience & do you want to spend the rest of your life thinking, 'oh we could have gone their?'
