Fear of Flying/Honeymoon related

Original post by squeekietoy

I may have posted about this before, but, I'll get into it again.
I have a SEVERE fear of flying. So much so, that it has prevented me from booking my Honeymoon. Mind you, I am getting married in 3 weeks. My fiancee is semi mad at me bc I won't pick somewhere to go. I'm mad at myself and no matter how many times I look at the stats online for flying safety it never makes me feel any better. My problem is that I am a MASSIVE control freak. I feel that unless if I am flying the plane myself, I won't feel relaxed or safe.
Am I a total freak? Hehe. Does anyone but myself have this problem? If so, please tell me how you cope with it. Because I know that the second I book a flight that is all I'm going to obsess about between now and then.

I have a huge fear of flying (and I'm claustrophobic) to the point that I have scared the crap out of other people who are good flyers (I tend to get panic attacks and cling to people, literally). I get over it by taking Dramamine when they announce boarding, pass out, and sleep through the whole flight. For long flights (over 5 hours) tranquilizers do the trick.

I guess the other thing with me is that even though I have this fear, I try really hard not to let it get in the way of my life. Think of all the things you miss out on by simply being afraid! I'm a very proactive person so there was no way I wasn't going to book a HM to some beach location in the winter (plus FH has only flown once before and has never been on a vacation so I didn't want to ruin it for him).

I think the greatest thing you can do to overcome any fear (and this is coming from a professional) is just force yourself to confront it and focus on positive thoughts. Think that things are going to be ok (it's safer than driving, etc.). If you do that enough you can get enough courage to get on the plane and go. And of course sleeping through it helps too!

I have a little fear of planes as well. What messed me up with flying was I was stuck on the tar mat for over an hour and was sitting in the last row. I started to freak out because everyone was standing and the plane seemed to be growing smaller and smaller. However I love traveling so now I am just super anal about making sure I book early to pick a seat up front.

Its hard when you have a fear of something. Truthfully this will sound funny but I am very afraid of birds and trust me it is hard to avoid them but I try not to let the fear control me, and once you face the fear each time it becomes a little easier.

I'm ok once I get up in the air. I'm just one of those people that is a fatalist. I always think 'it's gonna be me'. And I obsess. Like, it will literally be all that I think about between now and the day that I leave. I'll be thinking 'well, what if this happens, what if that happens'. It occupies my thoughts and drives me up a wall.
My doctor suggested therapy. I think it's something I may need to look into eventually.

I have severe anxiety and I can completely relate to what you said! I have an extreme fear of flying but it is mostly because I have an all around phobia of death. Before I went on my trip in August I kept looking up statistics on airplane crashes and 'how to survive a crash' and I was making myself sick with worry! I took a FEW sedatives when I flew and I was still scared but definitely not as bad as I would have been if I didn't take anything! I would highly recommend seeing a doctor and having them prescribe you something just to get through the flight!

I have. I just have OCD and I freak easily over things that I really have no control over. Most of the time I'm perfectly fine, but when I do freak out over things, it's big time. Like the flying thing. Usually when I'm up in the air, I'm ok. It's getting me on the plane that's the hard part. My FH says I'm an embarassment. LOL. He's right. If you would see me in an airport you would think that someone had murdered someone right in front of me bc I'm usually in hysterics. It's really quite pathetic. The last time I flew I had to have my doctor give me Valium. And that was to go to Florida.

I am the same way.. I feel like i can't control the plane, so i freak out..but in the same token I also think about that to calm me down.. I have no control, so why freak out.. freaking out won't help anything...i would definitely think about taking something before your flight...
And remember the chaces of any thing happening are EXTREEEEEEMLY slim!!

I am terrified of flying. I already booked my HM and I have nitemares already once a week about flying. I am deathly afraid... however I travel often... my secret? Xanax. It really works for me. Once I am on I usually dont really open my eyes I keep them closed and try to fall asleep...but I usually cry while taking off and landing. Yet I still would probably fly anywhere in the world, I love to see new places....Im a nut
