FeliciaDA aka the Westchester thread

where in Westchester do you live? We just bought a house in Ossining (on the border of Chappaqua) and should be moving in in May.

I don't know Westchester at ALL! I grew up in Long Island and have lived in the city for the last 5 years.

I'm going to get lost!!!

Hi Jodi, sorry I didn't see this until just now!!

We live in Scarsdale (on the border, actually closer to White Plains). Ossining is about 25 minutes north of us. It is SO VERY pretty up there close to the Chappaqua, congrats on the purchase of your new home!!

Believe me getting around Westchester is a LOT easier than Long Island. FH even says so, and he didn't know anything about Westchester until he moved in with me and he learned the area very quickly.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about Westchester... I don't know a WHOLE lot about Ossining but I'm sure I can find out for ya

I grew up in Edgemont, right up the hill from Scarsdale Village I currently live in Jersey, and weighing the Westchester vs. Jersey living post tying the knot...

What a small world! Well I happen to live in the EDGEMONT apartments right of Central Pk Ave.. they call us 'Scarsdale' but you & I both know that is FAR from it (the Garth Road/Scarsdale Village people look down on me!! )

I grew up in Yonkers, lived in Portchester for awhile, back to Scarsdale.

We have NO idea where we will wind up either .. Westchester is so expensive .. Do you find Jersey a little more reasonable (I guess it depends on where in Jersey, of course)

A GTG would be fun

Is it true you can't make left turns in New Jersey?

I don't know why i just thought of that - but that was one argument my FH made against living there.

How funny!

Places in Westchester I would be interested in looking into are: Hastings, Hartsdale and areas around White Plains if we are to continue renting or buying a 2 bedroom condo.

Houses, I am clueless. I currently live in Hoboken and the real estate there is $$$$ since it's so close to the city. It's also a younger crowd. I THINK you get more for your $$$$ in Jersey (depending what one compares), but I would really have to do more research to be confident with that statement.

I used to 'hang out' at the 7-11 on Garth Road, a quick pit stop for the slurpies

Ok, i'm being nosy-
even though the origianl post was for felica.
I'm in Westchester too.
I'm from LI ( hence the wedding) , but FH moved to Yonkers/Scarsdale border when he was 8 & I live in Mt. Vernon now.

When I was looking for my apartment in Mt vernon we used to stop there( near FH's house) a lot for snacks before FH drove me back to LI

Ossining is nice. We are considering Mamaroneck, Hartsdale & Rye, but for co-ops. Houses are too expensive. We'll live in my apartment in Mt. Vernon ( Fleetwood ,actually, if you know the area)

I miss being near the family on LI , though.

Gotta love 7-11 .. its about the only one in Westchester, too (FH laughs at this, there are so many on LI)

I take the train from Hartsdale into NYC, I LOVE Hartsdale and wish I bought my co-op there when the prices were better.. now even they are out of control. Forget about a house, we know we cannot do it unless we look further north .. and that isn't going to happen b/c I don't want to commute over 1 hour one way! I'm spoiled now, my commute into NYC is 35 minutes to Grand Central.. easy!

For now we'll suck it up and stay in our little 1 bedroom apt. until we can figure out where to settle.. its hard, FH loves LI and misses his friends a bit, but that seems REALLY out of the question for us

FH misses LI also, Tourist. HE only moved to Westchester b/c I owned my apartment, he was renting.. Fleetwood is actaully very nice area, one of my best g'friends lives in a co-op there.. Rye & Mamaroneck are both so beautiful but WAY out of our league (I used to live on the Portchester/Rye border.. but it certainly wasn't RYE!)

Really if we both weren't so close to our families we'd move out of NY altogether.. but we'd miss them too much, as well as our friends..

Ok...I'm butting in here. I moved to Jersey last year (right near Giants Stadium/Continental Airlines Arean)....it's nice here. Only about 15 mintues into the city. However...I work in NJ, so I don't go to the city as much as I used to.

It's true...you can't make left turns on major roads...they have these things called jug-handles. They are PITA. You have to drive several miles out of the way...find a u-turn to get to the other side. You know that everything you need is always on the other side

I have a 2BR condo that I bought before I met FH. He moved in with me shortly after we met (his lease was up...nowhere to go). We plan on staying in it for another year or two...but have no idea where we will buy after that because everything is so $$$$$.

We were originally looking into Hartsdale, Mamaroneck, etc. but we couldn't afford it. The houses in Ossining were definitely more affordable but its a 50 min commute...ugh

I'm an original Westchester Girl! I grew up in Harrison. Right next to Rye on one side, mamaroneck on the other.

My sister just moved back to that area from Scarsdale - she actually lived on Garth Rd....

I love it there but WAY too expensive for my taste these days! I am in Jersey and yes you get used to having to travel 3 million miles out of your way to get to the other side of the freaking road!!!

I love Jersey though - it's close to the city and I actually like the 'grittiness' of it!!!

OK all these former Westchester girls (now Jersey girls) have me thinking that NJ is a place we need to explore come house and/or condo hunting time.. Can any of you NJ peeps give me ideas of some nice (and reasonable) areas, not TOO far from LI and a reasonable commute to NYC?

Am I asking for the IMPOSSIBLE?? LOL

Just wanted to chime in and say I was born in White Plains, and lived in Yonkers until I was 3 (then moved to the Bronx)…plus my mom lives in New Rochelle.

I have nothing else to contribute, especially anything useful about real estate, but I wanted to share!

Thanks, you are always welcome to chime in! I usually feel so lost on here with the LI and Queens girls, so it helps to have some Westchester (former and present ) girls on here as well!

Believe me I have nothing useful to contribute re: real estate in Westchester either, except to state the obvious -- that it is ALL out of my league financiallly!
