FH didn't get into grad school...

FH didn't get into grad school...

...FH had applied to Columbia's MBA program and although it would have been a difficult way to start a marriage, he was hoping to start in FA04. He found out yesterday that he didn't get in. I feel so bad for him. His ego is really bruised (he applied last year too and didn't get in).

What can I do to make him smile? I hate to see him like this

I am so sorry to hear that. BC of the economy a lot of people are going back to school.

Has he talked to a counselor about why he hasn't gotten in?
Is there anything he can do to improve scores or work experience?
Is there another program that he can go into? Then maybe transfer to Columbia.

Make him his fav dinner and rent a really funny movie.

Columbia used to offer a follow up meeting where an applicant could have a session with a counselor and go over his application and find out what was wrong. They don't do that anymore. His GMAT score was good (710) and his essays seemed good (I was editing them, I know). Personally, I think it is the state of the job market that has put him up against fiercer competition who have more job experience.

I think he is going to apply to NYU for their late admission date. I hope he gets in there.

He got an awesome score!!! I'm sure it's probably the competition.

Everything happens for a reason. There's a time and place for everything to happen in our lives. Maybe he is 'meant' to go to another school, which will give him better options upon grad. Applying to NYU sounds like a good idea. Good Luck!!

AWE. I hope he feels better about it soon, and doesnt give up hope of furthering his education.
Sounds like he's ambitious and a great guy if that meant to much to him. Im sure there's something else in store right around the corner for him

Having been on at least one admissions committee at Columbia (tho' not at the B-school), I would agree with you about the kind of competition there is for grad school right now. We couldn't believe both the quantity and quality of applications we received last year - it was ridiculous to turn down many of the people that we did - as one of my colleagues put it, competition was so fierce that if you had a hangnail, you were out.

Juliet, I think FT MBA apps are actually down this year, b/c people who have jobs are reluctant to leave them... But regardless, he should definitely apply to NYU, because while Columbia enjoys a better global reputation, NYU's reputation in NYC area is pretty close to that of Columbia and many other top schools.

Its possible that if Columbia rejected him, he doesn't fit their 'profile', whatever that may be. I know of someone who similarly was rejected from Wharton THREE years in a row.

Edited to add that he may want to check out some of the school specific threads on www.businessweek.com forums (under B-School Tab).

I wonder how he could find out what the profile is for a 'typical' Columbia student.

Sorry to hear that but he should try not to take it personally. I know someone who graduated from Columbias MBA and that person is an absolute moron. So there is definitely more involved than ability and intelligence.

Thanks Stef. That is good to know.

I don't think there is a way to find out, short of meeting a bunch of students there... As far as the admission committee is concerned, there is no 'profile', but I think there is one for every school.

Maybe things will work out better with NYU. It is also a good school.

I just wish his brother didn't put so much pressure on him to go to an Ivy League highly ranked MBA program. His brother graduated from INSEAD in France and it is a hoity toity school. He thinks that FH needs to go to a school of that caliber.

Poor FH doesn't need this pressure.

I hope his brother doesn't blame me that FH didn't get in (I didn't push him enough, blah). My FBIL is the type who would love to pin the blame on me, even though he has only met me three times (he lives in Europe (has apts in Slovakia and Poland)

Ugh!

Insead is a great school for Europe, and Yes, Columbia is great too (and I were choosing between NYU and Columbia, I would pick Columbia), but DH needs to realize that admittance rate is only 15% or less, and its highly competitive for FT. And its 15% or less from all those that feel that they are qualified, not the general population... So its even more competitive.

Tell him that he must be strong and keep his chin up!!! and work on those NYU essays for the final round...

He can do it. I have faith in him. And if he decides to postpone it and go part time later in life, I will sit him down at the kitchen table and he can do homework with our kids (future)

Juliet, is he a Math-type person? I mean, is he interested in working in a quant field? I am the administrator of the 'Math Finance' program at NYU. If he wants more info, FM me.

He is somewhat of a math person. He is currently in corporate accounting. I guess that makes him a math person.
