FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

Original post by krisa1129

FH does not feel that spending money on a photographer is important...I keep showing him websites of really good photographers, but he is unimpressed. Tonight he said 'We don't have a pot to piss in, but we are going to spend 3k on a photographer?'. ...and he has a good point!! Every photographer I have looked at wants 3k at least...and we are on a MAJOR budget...we are trying to be able to afford a house at the end of this! I am soo STRESSED...sorry...just venting!

I agree with the other girls - you'll have your wedding pictures forever, so I would spend a little more.

I like your FH already.

Everyone is different. Some people value photographers more than others.

Although I HAVE read that the one thing most brides would change if they could (looking back retrospectively), is their photographer.

Do with that what you will...

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

I have put the majority of my money into finding the best photographer. That is something I don't want to get jipped on. I am paying 4000 for my stuff. If you want to be cheap, use 12th night. Then get albums or make your own later. We were gonna, but we just decided we wanted to just have it done. I just booked tonight. I am feeling pretty stressed lol. I found a cheaper DJ and made my wedding an afternoon on sunday, so thayt helped with pricing. GL

I'm sorry you're so stressed!

I think that photography is very important though. When all is said and done.... all that's left are your beautiful memories and the photographs! From what I've heard, the whole day FLIES by and is a huge blur.... but having the pictures will help you relive the day for years to come! I know that it's hard when you're on a budget... but IMO, photography and your band/dj are the two things that i wouldn't go 'cheap' on. i hope you can find an inexpensive photographer without having to sacrifice quality!

one thing you should think about in order to save money, is a DIY album.. hold on, i will find the link to someone who made one (all you have to do is design the pages and they are easy to format... and they'll be printed out for you and bound in a book for MUCH MUCH less than a photographer)

I agree!

There are alot of very good photographers that just offer coverage. You can wait to purchase albums and extras.

But i can tell you my sister called a few places to have someone come for a couple hours to take pics at the reception in February (she is getting married tommorow in the bahamas) and the cheapest price she got was 1700.

It costs money for photographers to come out, set up their equipement etc.

HOw much do you want to spend?

FH here:

You guys seem helpful and all, but this weekend I'm going out to buy 120 disposable cameras and hand them out to all of the guests!

Take that, expensive photography!

There is a big difference in quality between disposable and professional. Especially on low light conditions. I just wanted to let you know because you can't go back to get pictures from the day. I want to help you be 100% with your decision!

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

Hey krisa, I totally know where you're coming from. FH is kinda the same way on this end too! If if were up to him, he'd have one person out of our friends or family dedicated to taking the pictures all day/night!!

But I definitely agree with everyone on the fact that it's the only thing you'll physically have left through the years to look back on. We haven't priced much out yet, but I do know that there are DEFINITELY packages under 3K!! (And that's with albums too)
Basically we're going to do an album....but nothing entirely fancy....just simple. We're not doing a video, and our main concern is just finding a place that gives you all digital images on a disc. Then that way we can just get the album and a few extra prints from the photographer, and then do other stuff along the way! There are MANY websites that offer very affordable ways to have albums made or any kind of keepsakes with pictures. snapfish.com is just one for an example.

But overall, I totally understand what you're going through!!! GL, and I'll FM you with any pricing info that I get along the way if you'd like!!

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

I dont know if this is an option but throwing it out there, since FH doesn't agree paying so much for the photographer, would you be willing to put in for it or at least more...When i have heard comments about my dress i said listen i am not asking anyone to pay for it so not your problem, i'll pay for it then...My parents said they are gonna help me out with it but i will put in for it too.

Same thing with other things too, when people said well thats too much to get that extra little something, i said i will put in the extra amount for it...Then when i get my paychecks and dont spend most of it and put it away i do wonder why did i open my mouth lol...But there are somethings some people wont compromise on and gotta do what you gotta do, if this is one for you then maybe that can be an option...But if not there are photographers who will work within your budget. Good luck

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

I am in the minority here, but I don't want to spend a lot on a photographer either. Personally, it's not one of my top things to focus my budget on. For me, I would like 1 or 2 great pictures of us to hang in our home, and an album. Do the pictures need to be breathtaking to sit in a box on a shelf somewhere in my home? Not really. I want nice picutres, but I don't need magazine quality.

Again, that is just my opinion. My best friend is getting married in August and she just booked her photographer. She spent a lot of time researching them and is willing to spend a lot more than me because photography is very important to her. To each her own!

Yeah thats exactly why everyone says it depends on how important it is for you personally...Some prefer to spend more on photography rather than flowers and for others its the opposite, you just have to figure out whats more important for you.

For me its extremely important, i mean i go crazy with pics when its a regular night and a bunch of us go out hahaha. Its whatever your preference is

Thanks for all your responses...I agree with everyone, and photography is important to me, but just not him. I take my camera everywhere I go...and I believe that he will see once we get the pictures back that I was right...but until then, it is an uphill battle here! He is pretty easy going with the whole wedding thing, but he doesn't want to spend a lot of money, which I believe that we can do it classy without going overboard. I want to stay in the 2000-2500 range...it is just disconcerting when every price list I get is 3000 and up...but I know most photographers will work with you on your budget. I already went to meet with Duet, and I have an appointment with Thomas Paul. I also really love Velvet's work...so that is on my list as well. I really love the photojournalistic style (of course, the most expensive)...soo we will see!! I will try to do as much as we can. I don't really want an engagement session, or even parent pictures. I do have a question though...if the photographer gives us a disc of the pics, can we then get them printed, or done up in an album by ourselves, or are they copyrighted? That might be a dumb question, but I am clueless. Do I need the negatives? If anyone has any info this, I would love to hear it!

If you are getting the photographer for just coverage then you'd want the negatives of digital images so you can make your prints or albums yourself.

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

I went to Twelfth last night and met with Dominick. They offer GREAT deals and GREAT packages. You have the option to get regular proofs, or all your proofs done on a DVD with all the digital images. They are not copyrighted you you can have the images printed up anywhere you choose (i.e. - snapfish, shutterfly, etc.) You can get an album done by them at a later date or order your album elsewhere too!
FM me if you want any more details!!

E-pics are usually part of the package, you dont get charged extra

Re: FH wants to cheap out on photographer..

we opted for no parent albums, to make our package cheaper. you can still get an album for yourself, the proofs, and a cd for a reasonable price!!

and if you want albums for your parents, you can make really pretty ones yourself at shutterfly. they have wedding album designs and they're only like $30 bucks.
