Finally someone is excited for me! How much is too much for a gown?

Original post by JessicaLuvsDanny

Finally someone is excited for us! My darling aunt is apparently so excited for me and Danny that she said she wants to take me dress shopping and buy my dress for me -- no budget!

I really appreciate this but I'm afraid to pick out something too expensive. I'm looking for a ballgown, I think with a little glitz. I've liked some of the Kenneth Pool dresses I saw online, but haven't really looked much.

My aunt wants to take me to Kleinfields this weekend so we can look at dresses. I probably need to order ASAP because I heard dresses take a long time to come in. My fiance is calling some halls tonight so hopefully we will decide on August or November.

Any suggestions? How much is too much to spend on a gown when someone else is paying?

I am wearing maggie sottero mona lisa royal...I think it's a total princess dress and I think it's $1200 in the stores. it varys and it doesn't have to cost a fortune to be nice. Personally, unless someone asks i think it's hard to tell between a dress that is 1000, or 5000....and most people won't ask...

Have Fun at Kleinfelds its a great store!!!!

If your aunts offering to buy you a dress, just try on a ton of dresses and see which one makes you feel like a princess, i really wouldnt focus on the price if its a gift from your aunt. I would focus more on how the dress makes you feel inside and out!

HAVE FUN.

My advice is to not buy a dress or put down a deposit on your first time out. I did this & then had major regrets & had to buy a second gown. Take your time, bring a camera & have an open mind.

However, I found a great place & saved $$$. This is where I got my (2nd) dress. Mine was a Melissa Sweet, originally priced at $3400 but I paid $1500. See my review for more info.

Once you find THE dress, you can check this website to see if they have it.

having no budget is nice...but at the same time, you want to be reasonable.
11k on a dress...thats a lil insane...but who am i to judge...if you can afford it then its in your means...rock on.

but i was happy with my $1500 dress....it all depends on your taste.

I would look online at styles...Dont just get a certain designer just because.

look at all different ones.

I loved Eve Of Milady, but i found a similar one from Demetrios.

Its all what you like...

Have fun!!

I have to agree 100%
I tried on many many dresses, and cant imagine what would of happened if bought the first one out.
I went to tons of stores, and i think if you are serious about getting married this year, They can order your dress in time...they do lie and say it takes longer than waht it normally does because they dont put the orders in right away. They hold them back until its closer to the date....

Cause think about it, how could anyone make money if something like a wedding gown took 10 months or more to make...the person making it is either making a dollar a day, or they are lying and it takes alot shorter.

The wedding gown business is the shadiest business

I too had to buy two gowns because I jumped the gun. Walk away, think about for at least a week, SHOP AROUND and talk them down in price - I got my dress for 600 dollars less than they asked by getting other prices and going back to the original salon (I liked them and wanted to use them).

i was shocked at dress prices. i LOVE LOVE LOVE my gown (pics are in my albulm) but I had no clue I would fall in love w/ a dress that is over $6K.

I loved my woman at Kleinfeld's - Jennifer Cara - just so nice and fun. I think it is important to discuss a price point or cap - you don't want to try on something that you can't afford. Plus sometimes if you tell someone the sky is the limit they will start with higher priced dresses. Kleinfeld's has a room where all the dresses are 3k and under. Why not start in there - bring some magazine pictures of what you like and then they can bring you more expensive dresses if you don't like anything you found in the under three thousand room.

My dad's second wife (not to be confused with his third) bought my dress for me, so understand it is difficult to discuss price with someone else. Maybe if the woman asks you in front of your aunt she will say what she thinks.

Honestly I really did love Jennifer - she was just amazing - I never felt rushed once and she always made me feel beautiful but that she was being honest.

I had a great experience at Kleinfelds also! I had Sarah and she was great! No pressure at all. Go in and tell them you want a ball gown and they will let you walk through their room of dresses and pick ones you like! Find a few you like then look at prices. How much money is too much is really relative. Ask your Aunt what she thinks after you try a couple on!

Have fun!!!

I def think you need to find a average budget before u go or else it can be dissapointing. Hey, you should try on dresses with her and see her reaction to the cost. I think if she is saying no budget 4k-5k isn't insane. Kenneth Pool soooo nice!

Re: Finally someone is excited for me! How much is too much for a gown?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let your heart be your guide as far as cost for your dress. You should really be motivated by how it makes you feel versus the price. I stuggled with the cost of my Kenneth Pool Gown for weeks. My co workers were all like 'GET IT GET IT' (Thanks Nicole lol) but at the same time a lot of my FH family memebers think im crazy and insane. I'm sure on my wedding day there wont be a jaw thats not dropped in the place, and i'm still in love with it. Have fun shopping and remember follow your heart i promise you'll never look back. You'll know its the one when everything else you see starts to look ugly, even really nice ones that you may have considered before!

PS imagine if you find the dress of your dreams and you dont pick it. You will definately think about it everytime you go to a fitting and every time you look at other brides dresses. And at your wedding photos

PPS also another option would be if you finda dress outside of your aunts budgets you and the FH can cover the difference. It can still be her special gift to you!
