My horses are stabled a couple of blocks from the Islip side of the park... we ride in the park all the time. Please pray they get the fire out soon. I'm really worried.
Here's the article: (04/23/07) OAKDALE – Twenty fire departments have responded to a brush fire at Connetquot State Park in Oakdale. The fire is burning close to Sycamore Avenue and Church Street. White smoke is covering a large area in and around the park.
Connetquot State Park Preserve maintains 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection of animals. It also has 50 miles of trails for various activities.
The flames broke out around 12:15 p.m.

I'm worried for all the people in the area, too, especially those with homes on that side of the park. My horses are on the other side, so should be okay for now (as they are also a few blocks from the park). I just worry about smoke inhalation, as I understand the smoke is covering a large area. I rescued both my horses, and I love them to pieces - they're my babies.
I'm also concerned about the people in the area, of course, and the wildlife in the park.
Anyone close to that area have any info? I'm in Manhattan at work now!

Oh my god!!! I am not just worrying about the horses its the wild life that thrives on this little patch of reserved land on long island. I have visited there plenty of times in order to study spotted and eastern box turtles. I am so sad right now!!!

Thanks for all the prayers - I am sure many people needed them more than I did. Luckily, as far as I know, my horses are fine and will be fine. My friend boards her horse with mine and she went out this afternoon. She said there was no smoke over the barn and they were okay.
I hope there weren't any human casualties -- and I hope the horses in the area are okay. I'm sure that there were many wildlife casualties in the park, but hopefully the majority of animals are okay, too.
I'm going to try to go find more info now...

just to keep everything in perspective.... the fires in LI forests are a necessary part of the life cycle... they clear out a lot of underbrush, and help the pine trees germintate... The wildlife has evolved to escape and protect themselves from it....
silver lining: we'll be seeing a lot of baby pine trees over the next year
