First day unemployed...

Original post by xjulietx

...don't even know what to do with myself. I never took a sick day in the past 5 years and only took personal days when I had something to do. This is the first time in 5 years that I have been home and it isn't because I have an appt in the middle of the day.

So far, I ate breakfast, made the bed, changed the placemats on my table to something springy and lively (had red for Valentine's Day) and dusted a little.

I looked online for some job leads, but nothing new that applies to me.

What do I do now?

Re: First day unemployed...

First of all, I have been in the same situation, where I was working part time and then off a few days (I haven't been called as much to subsitute teach, my other part time job). I felt guilty that I was home and felt every day had to be productive. When I went on here or played games on the Internet I felt bad about it.

Now approaching the day where I am going to start a full time job, this time I had to relax and unwind will soon end and I will miss it. I agree with the others, find some projects like organizing pictures or papers around the house that need to be put in order, maybe take advantage of going to the gym (if this is something you would like to do), and go out and do things you always said you never had time to do.

Best of luck in your job search!

Start slow ... try to enjoy some free time. You deserve it (especially after you had to go back to work after clearing it out ... that would have killed me. I, on the other hand, kept my leaving a secret for weeks until I pretty much walked out the door).

Are you eligible for unemployment?

Re: First day unemployed...

This is my second week of unemployment.
I did an early spring cleaning. I threw out 5 bags of trash. I reorganized my closet and my kitchen.

I finally had a chance to place some pictures on the walls.

I bought a cardio workout tape. I do it twice a day. ( I figured I might as well lose weight)
And I now have the time to prepare my healthy meals.

I signed up for unemployment.

I am now hooked on Ellen, Dr. Phil, Oprah, LIfetime and Court TV (not the Michael Jackson Trial)

As each day goes by, I am getting to bed later and waking up later. I had a feeling this might happen.

I am on the internet (LIW) quite a bit but I try to limit myself.

Caught up on Doctors Appts.

Today, is the first day that I have nothing to do!

I am truly enjoying staying home. It is going to be hard to go back to work. Enjoy this time!

I've been unemployed for two weeks now and I'm going out of my mind with boredom. I should be starting my new job next week, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: First day unemployed...

I think I will qualify for unemployment and I got a decent severance. I guess I was guilty of placing too much emphasis on my job even though I didn't like it.

I identified myself with what I did and the company I worked for. I talked about them as 'we did this' or ' we offered that' Now I am having a hard time I dealing with the fact that that safe place I went to everyday is gone. Someone else will go to that office, someone else will do those tasks (and some more--the reason why I was laid off was because they needed someone to do some other different things)

I am having a hard time not thinking about the work that I left on my desk.
