First RSVP crisis – vent, sorry long!

First RSVP crisis – vent, sorry long!

So I invited my cousin to our wedding (her father is my mother’s half brother). I haven’t seen her in a couple of years and she is a few years younger than I am, but since we do live in the same city and we used to hang out a few years ago and I don’t have a big circle of family and friends (The wedding guests are 70% FH’s guests only 30% my guests). I figured this is the best time for me to try to reconnect with her. I invited her with guest even though I know she is not in a serious relationship, so about a week ago, we received her response Yes + 2. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, and I thought that maybe she is bringing more people from the family (her father is a Dr. and lives in another country so I didn’t even invite him since we are not that close anyway, and it would be almost impossible for him to come, then, she also has two brothers who are younger than her and don’t come to the US often) So I am thinking all this time, maybe it is one of them and even if I wasn’t planning on inviting them, I didn’t care if it was them because they are family. Besides all this, I have been trying to contact her for the last two weeks, she does not call me or e-mail back. Well, my mother spoke to another of my aunts (not her mom) yesterday and she told her that I have been trying to contact my cousin and explained to her why, my aunt said she has not been able to get in touch with her recently either but that when my cousin sent the RSVP she told her she is coming with 2 of her girlfriends. My aunt told my mother that when she heard this she didn’t think it was appropriate but that she did not think it was her place to say anything about it. Well, now I told FH and he went crazy about it. And now I have to contact my cousin to let her know that she is allowed only one guest. The worst part is that this is creating a lot of stress on me, because I am very non-confrontational and is killing me to have to do this even though she is wrong. I wish I was more assertive and that it wasn’t so difficult for me do this…I was dreading any type of situation like this to come up.

Is it really so horrible to have her come with two invited guests instead of one ?

You can bring this up with your cousin in a non-confrontational way. Just tell her that you need to clarify her response card, you want to make sure that TWO people will be attending. When she mentions that she will be bringing two guests, you can just 'oh honey, because of space issues, we are only inviting one guest to come with you.'
Maybe she'll get it then.

You are trying to re-establish your relationship with your cousing, and run the risk of undoing all that you have done.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. That is so rude of your cousin to do. She is wrong. Email her. Say you are sorry but one guest only and leave it at that. No need to make a major confrontation out of it. I think an email would be fine.
