she decided to 'surprise' me with a wedding band (ring). its not that i'm not grateful and its a pretty ring but it doesn't go with my ering and i had been looking forward to us choosing our bands together. I didn't get to choose my ering either

that's a good idea. FH isn't wild about that idea. Is he supposed to put both on me at the ceremony?

Ive never heard of that. Id ask your DH if you knew about it. If not maybe he can tell his mom that he already bought you one as a surprise that matches your e ring?

What about picking his band, and then having the one she bought you altered to match? They could even melt it down and refashion it, but it would still be the same ring.
Yeah, I'd be a little upset if I didn't get to pick any of my rings. That is quite a gift though! I think my FMIL got us a blender.

nah.....depending on what the one she got you looks like, maybe see this as an opportunity to have a 'nice' one and a 'can get ruined one.' or just wear both...he can put both on you....i personally agree with you, you should both pick out your bands...it's almost like a rite of passage and for me, it's one of the few things FH has bothered to help with in all the planning.

yeah i think that's a bit weird. i'd ask your FH about it and find out why she did that--was he in on it? maybe you could wear that one on your right hand? i'd make FH tell her that he was gonna get you one himself and that he appreciates her effort--but she's stealing his thunder!

Re: FMIL - isn't this weird?
thanks. she went out and bought one. Don't get me wrong - i'm grateful and know she meant well. Its a pretty eternity band but unfortunately it doesn't fit well with my ering - too much gap between them. i'm relieved though because when i tried them on for her she agreed that it doesn't fit well so now i need to exchange it. FH was upset too but knows she meant well - only that's a pretty personal thing. i was just stunned and curious to see if anyone had something like that happen.

You really have to wonder about some people!

Re: FMIL - isn't this weird?
Umm, that would severely piss me off. A wedding band is very personal, and something that your FH should buy for you. I would absolutely have her return it, just tell your FH to tell her it doesn't match.

Re: FMIL - isn't this weird?
i'm just hoping i'll find something and be able to exchange it. ii want to wear them together on the same hand. i partly think they were trying to help him out by buying it and i'd never hurt their feelings. I'm glad i'm not alone though in thinking it was odd because FH made me feel like i should just be happy about it.

YEs I think it is very weird. But it sounds like something my FMIL would do just to piss me off.
