FMIL wants a limo to go to the chuch and reception

FMIL wants a limo to go to the chuch and reception

FH just told me that his mom wants a limo to go to the church and reception because she doesn't want her or her husband to drive and they have 10 house guests that day. When I said that my family is all going by car and they have room in their cars (and we live in the same town) FH said no she wants a limo.

I feel ridiculous saying this, but I hate the idea of all of his relatives making a grand entrance in a limo when my mom and grandmother, stepgrandfather and cousin will be getting out of a minivan.

Am I being petty and just letting it bother me because my countdown clock says 17 days?

I would feel the same way. But let her do whatever she wants, just don't even begin to offer to help her arrange for it or pay for it. If that's what she wants to do, than she's on her own.

i guess you've got to pick your battles but i agree, i definitely wouldnt help pay for it if i were you...

I would feel exactly the same way. We offered a limo to our parents and ( thank goodness) they both turned it down and said they were more then happy to drive their regular cars.

How about instead of a limo she take a town car?? like the nice taxi lincoln kind?

Even though I wouldn't be thrilled with it, I would probably arrange it if they were in any way helpful or supportive during the planning process. Since the groom's parents don't get the spotlight quite like the bride's parents, I could probably be talked into easily.

They need to bring 10 out of town guests with them so they need something BIG.

I am not offering to help, but FH is calling the limo company for her. I just feel like it is something that should be reserved for the bridal party, and if MY mom is not going in a limo, his mother shouldn't either.

If it were me, I would tell that she should make the necessary arrangements, including payment. It would be another story if your family were arriving by limo.

instead of a limo what about a small party bus?? they have ones that are for like 15 people and it will probably be more comfortable for them then a limo. It also wont seem like they are making a 'grand entrance' since it looks like a van on the outside.

Hmm. That is a tough one. Since you guys live in the same town it is hard. FI's parents wanted a limo if FI got ready in Staten Island so they would not have to deal with the stress of driving and sitting in traffic. So we got them a small towncar limo which holds 4 people. But now that FI is getting ready in our new house they are driving themselves to the Church. Maybe you can get a small shuttle bus for them and the out of town guests if it really bothers you. I have seen that at weddings. If it was me - I would pick my battles and probably not pick this one. But everyone is different. But, FI's parents were paying when they were getting the limo.

If you go with this idea why don't you put all the parents on the bus? We had limos for our parents and believe me they really appreciated it. It's a really long day and I don't think any of them would have felt like driving home. Plus this way they all got to enjoy themselves.

If she wants the limo tell her to pay for it. I can understand how you feel with your family coming out of a minivan but just look at it this way...who's going to see them get out of the limo? Aren't they going to get there way before everyone else? Good Luck

Then FMIL should pay for her own limo.

I would also ask that it be more subtle than your limos - maybe a town car instead or black if your limos are white, and state that she can't be dropped off / picked up in the same spot you are.

Pick your battles it won't be the end of the world if someone else is in a limo that day.

Well, FH says she is paying for it, he is just making the arrangements because she is not that confident in her English speaking to call.

I don't deny them a few moments of spotlight, but when it makes my mom look unimportant it bothers me.

Both sets of parents have been supportive, but my parents have gone out of their way to do nice things for us. Our Xmas gifts from my parents (aside from some personal items) were our favors and invitations. My parents are paying for the reception, flowers, and the band. My parents paid for my gown, tiara, veil, shoes, underwear. My mom paid for my shower (even though the gifts are for both of us) My parents have helped us find a priest to perform our mass (since it is on a Sunday and the church didn't have enough priests to perform all of the days masses)

This just bothers me that his mother wants to come in like a primadonna. I like her, but this rubs me the wrong way.

I say who cares as long as they are paying for it!

I don't think its petty - actually, no, I do think its petty, but I'd be mad just the same (and I am) because my FMIL did the same thing!! *I'M* not showing up to my wedding in a limo, I don't understand why anyone else should... pisses me off big time. But in my situation, FILs haven't done much except give FH a headache so they don't even deserve it. It's all about the principle of the matter.

But if she's willing to pay for it herself then I wouldn't mind as much.

I think it is the idea that it is a limo. Coming out of a stretch limo has a different connotation than coming out of a limo-bus.

Who knows, maybe with 17 days left, they won't be able to get a limo

I agree. If your Mom is Ok with going in a mini van, then screw it. I don't think people are going to be paying attention to that anyway. Your guests will be looking for your limo not your FMIL.

I also wanted to mention that I don't think it is uncommon for parent's and immediate family to go in a limo. Every wedding that I have been to, there have been limo's for the family. We will be doing the same thing. Maybe his family is used to this too?

I know I told you not to get involved in the planning, but make a few calls yourself so you can steer this the way you want. Get a price for the limo bus/party bus and tell your FH to tell his mother. Just from looking for my wedding, a bus winds up being about $100 cheaper than a big limo and there's tons more room.

Yeah, I think a bus would be less offensive to me.

If FMIL still insists on getting a limo then I will ask my mother to accompany me and my dad on the way to the church.

i know what you mean, i too feel like my FH's family is trying to show up my family in everything they do...
they have been ridiculous. FMIL spent more on her dress than i did on MINE... as long as your family knows you didn't really have a lot of control over it, it won't be a big deal.
