For all the computer people on the board.... UPDATE
Original post by NYCHICK
What is the best cd to use for my cd favors. I know some of them have a yellow look to them as oppsed to the silver color that the record labels use to print for their artists. Which would you say is the closest to the best that I can get as a regular joe? I know there has to be some that are better than others. Thanks a bundle
Well I have much praises to all of you for wonderful suggestions. So apparenltly I HAVE a cd on my laptop that I knew nothing about for 2 years(damn that sears salesguy ). I am listening to all the tracks off the wedding cd and so far so good. It sounds great.
I am using TDK, 700mb, 80 mins. Cd-R. I only made one cd just to listen can I use these cd's to burn all of my favors? The tag says they were made in india.

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
yeah...it probally wont have a cd burner in it.. not that much stardard 2 yrs ago...
i will give you a link to bestbuy or a good online store but serval questions...
are you burning all these cd's yourself?
if you have a budget of 150-175, you would actually need to buy 2 things.
1. cd-burner (exteral) 2. usb 2.2 attachment (speed)
if u buy a burner now, it will only write at about 4x or so... you buy item #2, and buy a burner..it will burn at 52x

I honestly have never tried to burn a cd on it, but the salesguy in the store said it did not have a cd burner. The laptop was bought about 2 years ago.
to see if you have a cd burner... follow these steps
1. right click my computer and select propeties 2. click hardware tab 3. click device manager 4. click the + sign next to dvd\cd-rom drives 5. come back here and share what came up under it

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
Once you get the CD burned, if it works, go over your mothers house and copy it if you have a slow burner in the laptop.
To go USB 2.0 route, you need a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, which is probably $50 at least, then the burner. It's not worth it if you don't do it much.

I NEVER do it, that is why I got an ipod that holds thousands of songs so I never have to mess with cds ever again. I hope I get it to work

I figured as much, it's not worth dropping the extra cash. Do you have a CD you can test now? If not, go the route I said, and install iTunes on the PC with the record. Burn the first cd, test it, and see what you think.

How much do you think is reasonable to get good quality?

If you don't burn CD's all the time THIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY. But you do what you like, it's your cash.

indirectly no due to it's budgeted for her wedding. but if she does have it, i'm sure it would have future use.
but it is a valid statement

Trust me I have no desire to waste my hard earned money. But I have no desire to have horrible favors either. I would gladly not buy something that will end up in my basement after the wedding, but what are the alternatives? I am at work now, not at home so I will take a look at my comp. when I get home and let you know what is says.

Also, I found the parts much cheaper than 150-175. If she really wants to go this route, I suggest going to newegg.
Totally around $80 for the cheaper drive, or $108 for the better stuff. As far as a site goes, newegg is fantastic to order from and deal with. I've bought tons of stuff from them, no problems. I also have a Bafo item, and it works great.

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
ok..i didn't look to hard but those products also works. i would personally want a better brand. MSI is a good motherboard maker but never heard anything about cd-writer. I have brought cheap products just cause it was cheap (kodak - camera co) and i couldn't even brought 1 cd) that was $20. but then again, i gotten burners free after rebate and i still use em today...so hit or miss

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
What's the point of her getting a Plextor drive?(as an example) 85% of the time, stuff like Pacific Digital is rebadged Liteon drives. Liteon makes excellent drives, for a cheap price.
If I was recommending this stuff to someone who was burning constantly, and had a bigger budget, I'd go the direction of best money can buy. IMO, she wants to do these the easiest and cheapest way possible. I tried to provide that to her, but I still think she is best off trying to do it without buying stuff.

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
i do understand your point... i know all about products being sold off as another name and etc...
i was just saying that some products are not always the best when they are cheap... i gave an example of each. i'm all about saving money myself...
i believe this wedding is already up there in price..i wouldn't want to make it any higher but on the flipside, i would like this day to be perfect cause it only happens once...so if you want something, now is good chance to do it

Re: For all the computer people on the board....
Whatever you do, don't use any HP discs. They only play on certain systems. Of the 4 cd players my FH and I have, they only play on one.
