Re: For all those teachers......
definitely find a picture book that you can incorporate ... start off by reading it and then have the kids work on something related to it.
last year i did an ela demo in a primary grade. i read a book about feelings and we talked about different feelings. then i had them break up into pairs and act out different feeling moments and see if their partner could guess the feeling. at the end, we came back together and shared.
you could also use a picture book and work it into a writing lesson ... like descriptive words.
hope this helps!

Re: For all those teachers......
How about a folktale or fable? Interpreting the moral/lesson? Or a poem...figurative language. Definitely incorporate some type of written answer...short or long essay. If you've seen any of the sample ELA tests, use that as a guide in how to set up what you want the kids to do. Before the kids write, have them 'plan' with some type of graphic organizer. Let me know if you need more specific help...I taught 4th grade for five years!

I agree, definetly incorporate some test strategies too.
