If you can believe I've been living and working in the city for 5 years and I still don't own a suit....I first worked at a PR company and now I work at an Advertising agency, and the dress code at both is very casual.
Well, I have an interview tomorrow and I'm going to wear my 'interview staple' - black and white, wool, conservative, French Connection pants with a black cashmere turtleneck sweater with black heels and stockings.
I don't have the $$ to go out and buy a suit (I don't even have a black blazer) for this one interview...but do you ladies think this is ok???
I am interviewing at a handbag / leather goods company.

I would say so as long as you are pulled together and professional. Make sure you have a nice bag with you, a pad and oen to write with and maybe pull your hair back?

I think that you knwo better than anyone about your field/industry and I think that it really varies considerbaly what is appropriate for intevriews based on the position, company, type of work, etc.
I work int he corporate world and would def wear a suit to any interview that I went on BUT my sister works in music/advertsiing and she has never worn a suit.
From your description, I think as long as you look polished and neat you will be fine. Good luck!

You can wear the pants but I'd suggest maybe wearing a button down blouse or something softer instead of a turtleneck. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

oh, well - I don't have a buttoned down blouse that looks good with the pants - I raided my closet last night.
as far as the hair up thing....maybe just a low ponytail?
thanks for the suggestions ladies :)

Ten Interview Fashion Blunders What Not to Wear to the Interview
Wild Nail Polish: This tip is for women or men. Extremely long or uncut nails are a real turnoff, too. Your nails should be groomed and neat.
Jewelry That Jangles: Don't wear more than two rings per hand or one earring per ear. And no face jewelry or ankle bracelets allowed.
Open-Toed or Backless Shoes: And mules are a definite no-no. Out-of-date shoes should be thrown out or kept for other occasions.
Bare Legs: Wear stockings, even in humid summer weather. Stockings can be in neutral colors or a fashion color to match your shoes.
Out-of-Date Suits: These have lapels that are too wide (three inches or more) or too narrow (one inch or less). A good tailor can alter lapels. The style for men's jackets is full-body and looser rather than fitted or tight.
Short Skirts: Hemlines should not be more than three inches above the knee. Don't wear capri pants or leggings to the interview.
Leather Jackets for Men or Women: Even leather blazers are not good for interviewing purposes. They look like outerwear.
Turtlenecks for Men: A tie is preferable, at least in the first go-round. At the very least, wear a collared shirt.
Printed or Trendy Handbags: Purses should be conservative and inconspicuous.
Red Briefcases: Briefcases, purses and shoes should all be conservative in color and in good condition.

Tell them you are coing from interal group meetings all day at that it woudl have looked odd that you went into the office dressed for a client meeting they are fine with it. Actually a suit has become almost a shout that you dont have a job GOOD LUCK!

Re: For my interview tomorrow - I don't own a suit
I have gone with bare legs in the summer and got the job both times
I don't want a job that would make me wear hose in 90 degree weather...lol
but I agree with the rest- people tend to be more understanding today- especially if they know you are coming from a job- you don't want everyone at your current job to know you are interviewing

exactly - it's going to be obvious enough when i come in to work dressed all nicely.....i don't want to deviate that much from how i normally dress.
glad to know that you got the job interviewing with bare legs - there is hope for me :)

Re: For my interview tomorrow - I don't own a suit
go to h&m - you can get a great suit there for under $100
regardless of the money you have to spend right now- if you dont own a black suit, if you buy one its definitely a good investment and something you should have
also consider going to daffy's

Re: For my interview tomorrow - I don't own a suit
Instead of the sweater, do you have a solid button down shirt? To me a sweater is not interview attire, even though I'm sure it's a very nice looking sweater. Also, no big earrings, crazy makeup or strong perfume. Believe it a lot, a lot of people are not wearing suits these days. But it's important to carry yourself in a professional matter. Hope that helps.

Re: For my interview tomorrow - I don't own a suit
I worked in advertising for 6 years...when i was interviewing I never wore a suite. The only time I did was when I interviewed at Tiffany's, and that was because it has a very corporate enviornment.
Go with your gut, It sounds like you will be fine. Just look as polished as possible.
