For those of us who are getting married in a Catholic Church.....
Did your parish ask you to get an 'UPDATED' version of your baptismal certificate from the church you were baptized??
I never knew they did this...I always thought you could just give them the one you have all along..... The priest said something about them needing to have an updated one to make sure you were previously married....
Thats all well and good for me, I got baptized in West Hempstead....but my FH.......his church is in LIMA PERU!!!! This should be fun, trying to contact them.........

I got married in a Catholic church and my baptismal certificate was there already because it was my parish. My DH needed to get a COPY of his baptismal certificate but he only had one. What is an updated certificate? How Weird!!!

Yep, it's standard protocol. I think the baptismal parish is in charge of keeping tabs on who we marry and how many times
it was a royal pain in the toosh for FH.... his is in poland... he had to get relatives to get them. Normally, they want it dated less than 6 mo from the wedding, but they allow it to be a bit earlier for international cases....

The funny part was after the Father told us we needed this FH was like, 'well how am I going to get mine....its in a countryside town in Peru, and I have a hunch its not really standard practice in Peru to get an updated copy and who knows if the church is even still in existence?!' .....and the Father was like ' Well,.....Just write them a letter.'
The look on my FH face was priceless....

Nope, but I'm getting married in the church where I was baptized. FH is not Catholic, so all he had to do was bring a copy of his baptismal certificate when we first met with the deacon.

We both did (even though I received all of my other sacraments in the church where we were married).
The baptismal certificate on file at the church where you were baptized is the record of all of your sacraments. When you receive the new copy, it will have the information listed on the back of when you received your communion and confirmation (although both DH and mine didn't show record of communion just confirmation). After you are married, the church that has married you sends back the updated information to the church where you were baptized.

We were told we needed to get a new copy from the diocese no more than 6 months prior to the wedding.
Thank you for this post by the way! You reminded me to get on top of that. I'm getting married in my childhood parish, but of course we didn't move there until just after I was baptized in a different church. I need to get a copy of my certificate &^ FH's.

They need it to be dated within 6 months of your wedding.

thats so funny yo mention this b/c i got an updated version of FH's (i was baptized in the church we're getting married in so they hae mine already) & i went to drop it off about 2 weeks ago & they told me that the catholic church has a rule that you cant drop off baptisimal certificates unless its within 6 months of the wedding!!!! 6 MONTHS!!!!!!!! i dont understand what the difference is?! its not like FH is all of a suddon going to become un baptized in 6 months ya know?? lol

Re: For those of us who are getting married in a Catholic Church.....
yes you need it .. from what I learned where you are baptised is your 'home' church .. your Baptismal record stays there .. each time you receive a sacrament (communion, pennance, confirmaiton, marraige) it is listed on the back of your certificate. unless you are getting married in your 'home' church and your permanent record is there, you need to present the church with you and FI updated baptismal record ... good luck

Re: For those of us who are getting married in a Catholic Church.....
yes, this is standard....
and i wouldnt' worry about it--- it's standard around the world. have your FH call his parish in Peru and even though they may not send the original, they will send something with the seal of that parish statign that he was baptized there and when and any other sacraments he may have received there.
in turn, his marriage information will be forwarded to that parish after your amrried. the parish where you are baptized remains the 'home' parish even if you no longer live there--that one document contains all the sacraments you receive throughout your life because people move around, so one parish has all of them....hope this makes sense.

Re: For those of us who are getting married in a Catholic Church.....
There would be notations on it if you were previously married or if your FH had become a priest, etc. It is needed to make sure that you can be married in the church now

Can they send it to you by mail? I really don't feel like driving to Elmont plus I don't even know where the church is I was 6 months when we moved.
