For those of you who are not having kids at your weddings

Original post by Mrs. dleeny

except for nieces, would you say that if a 1st cousin's wife asked if she could bring her 4 months old baby, is that appropriate?

this 1st cousin's wife is not coming to our wedding b/c we won't let her bring the baby, even though I offered MY bridal suite to her baby & a sitter!

I have already commented on this subject but I'd like to add another opinion that people have a need to bring kids so people can 'kvell' (yiddish for 'make a fuss') over their kids when they are all dressed up. JMO.

And perhaps afternoon weddings are a little different than night time weddings, but no child under the age of 10 should be awake until 1 or 2 am. It burns me up when I see that. I dont care how special the occasion. We almost had our wedding on a Sunday afternoon and I caught sh*t from my brother when we switched it because our Saturday night wedding was interfering with my nephew's nap time. I am sorry but 2 and 3 year olds are NOT cute at 1 am - unless they are sleeping.

I don't think it's appropriate for a baby to be at a nighttime reception. And that's even if you were alowing children. It's just not the place for a baby.

I hear you. I really don't get some people. all the other parents who are coming to my wedding are looking SO forward to having a night out with their wife/husband without the kids.

FH's cousin's wife went back to work today. her MIL is there to take care of the baby for a few weeks and then the kid is going into daycare, not even in the same town as where she works. so WHY can't a sitter watch her baby in my bridal suite? why do people think that FH and I are the ONLY one's who need to compromise? SO aggravating!

I couldn't agree more! totally not an appropriate place for an infant!

the only 2 kids that will be at the wedding are FH's niece who is 11 and my cousin who is 13.

the mother's parents were supposedt o drive to NY from PA to watch the baby at the hotel everyone is staying at, but they backed out last month - God knows why. all they told us is that they suddenly can't make it. they have no family in NY, so unless it's a babysitter, there is no one else to watch the baby.

I think I am the only one having kids at my wedding 15 of them nonetheless - I love kids and have a kids table set up with chicken figers and fries for them - and I feel it is not a wedding unless there are kids running around in their little dresses and tuxs - but that is just me..and you have to do what you want so no kids is your policy then they have to follow it -

my wedding ends at 2AM! -

I think I'm the only one too, although I'm not really that happy about it. I'm the youngest cousin in my family- all of my other first cousins are married and have two to four children apiece. If I didn't invite the kids, I'd be the first one not to and that would cause a war. Unfortunately, it eats up the guest list. As it is, about 20 of my guests are children. *sigh*

Additionally, my FH only has two little cousins on his side that his mother babysits. If we didn't have kids, they'd be off the list as well and FMIL would cause a sh*tstorm.

Eloping. I'm beginning to dream about it. . .

No babies..they don't belong at a wedding reception. How much fun would that be for everyone if someone had to mind the baby constantly?

Your offer of a babysitter in your bridal suite goes over and beyond the call. If they don't like that, then they can stew in their own juices until they are done!

Two words: Bite Me!

Yeah! I agree!

We're allowing kids at our wedding, but thankfully, there really isn't that many kids among our guests, and all of them are ages 6 and up and pretty well behaved.

2 of my BMs will have 6 month old babies at the time of the wedding, and both of them are having their in laws watch the babies!!

I debated on the no kids issue, but FH said he couldn't deny people the right to bring their kids, especially if they're coming from out of town. Thankfully, most of the kids are tweens or teens! (I'm just hoping as Leslie said, that people are more looking for a night away from the kids!)

As for you standing on your rule, it is your wedding!!! If she does not like the rules, then she does not have to go!! A wedding is no place for a baby, and I can't say I've ever seen one at a wedding, either!

Janna darling. I DENIED THE OUT OF TOWNERS! It isn't their right to deny. It is the host's right to have a wedding without kids if that is what they want. I have adult cousins who will not come to my nephew's Bar Mitzvah in November OR my wedding because they don't even trust their in laws to watch them. And I am thinking the in laws raised the parents, they arent gonna drop a kid on its head for G-d's sake. Sometimes I wonder if it is the kid's issue or the parent's issue separating from their own children. And this is precisely why my child, when I have her/him will NEVER sleep in my room.

It's her loss and don't let it affect your day.

Several supporting anecdotes:
- The only children at my wedding were my first cousins (ages 14 and 10) who came from CA with their parents
- My 1st cousin's wife didn't attend my reception because she couldn't find a babysitter for her 8 year old daughter (cousin & wife are now separated, so no big loss)
- When my uncle (dad's brother) got married OOT, my mother didn't go to the wedding, nor did my dad's sister's husband because they stayed home and watched their respective children (I was 8 at the time)

You're very generous to offer babysitting services on site and your cousin's wife is foolish not to take you up on it.
