For those of you who own your home ....

For those of you who own your home ....

Do you plan on selling your house in the future and upgrading?

Do you think it is possible with the cost of houses today?

I love my house, we are in a good school district. It's a house we can grow into, 3 bedrooms 2 1/2 baths, LR, DR, Family room about 1800 sq feet. So we can stay and be totally fine.

But I really would like to move further East with a bigger piece of property, like an acre or so.

Is this in anyone's plans?

Yes it is in our plans, however, we JUST bought our house, so this is our plan for the WAY future! Our thoughts right now is really to move out of NY. But we'll see. It probably won't happen for a good 5-10 years.

I did not buy a starter home. Right now our plans are to grow old in our home. We don't want to go further out East and we think our house is big enough for our needs. Who knows if we will change our minds but this was our intention when saving and buying a home.

We have just purchased our home, and plan to be in it for a while. We have, however, discussed that sometime down the road we may consider selling our CT house and moving out of state where real estate is much cheaper. The difference would mean a substantial profit. But that would not be for at least a few years.

I have been thinking the same thing recently. My FH and I just bought our house (havent even closed yet) but we bought a house we love with the intention to move out in about 7 years and upgrade to something bigger. But one of my requirements was that the house we bought was something we could grow with just in case.
I wonder if we will be able to make a profit off our house in the years to come! It seems insane that the prices could go up from what they are now. I tell you, the people who bought their homes 5 or more years ago lucked out! My Brother got a large 4 bdr high ranch for 158. He could easily sell for 380. My BIL bought his home for 220 and just sold for 410. Its really mind boggling!

I would like to eventually move to a bigger home...but my DH wants to stay here forever, if he could, he'd be buried in the backyard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same here but we don't want to leave NY.

But, you'll see. The more I live in my home, the less I want to move. You do so much to make it your own that you would hate to give it up.

If I had your home I would never leave too.

Oh thanks Sweetie

I love it, and it will be very difficult to find another one with the same type of waterfront view (since our house juts out on the bluff further than all of our neighbors, so the view is not just straight ahead, but almost on all sides of the house with the exception of the front).

But, if we have a lot of kids, we need to add on more bedrooms, and I lived through so much remodeling that I NEVER WANT TO DO IT AGAIN.

I guess we'll see when the time comes.

We're always going back & forth about whether to move or not. We're in a desireable location and have an acre of property, but we don't know if we want to go through the hassle of a 2nd story addition (we'd probably have to move out of the home for a year in order to do the work we want done.)

We'll have more of an idea in a year or 2.

i love our neighborhood & our house, but the high school in our town is not one of the top schools & there are many districts nearby with higher ranked high schools. so we'll move into one of those towns before our kids (no kids yet) get into high school. but we'll be here for a long time until then.

Had had a three bedroom...and then took one of the bedroom's and knocked the wall out, so it's part of the master bedroom, (that area is like a dressing area)...
But, now it's back to a three bedroom with some remodeling that was done.

Now, we are working on a laundry room that will be attached to our master bath (which is not done).

We also bought our home with the intentions of 'this is it'. and once you make home improvements and start suiting things to your taste, it truly becomes your HOME.
We picked a good location, school district etc, with the intentions of being here a VERY long time.. We love the home and love the area...

With the prices of homes these days, I wouldnt even know what qualifies as a 'starter home'? If you buy a home, you are investing all your eggs so hopefully its what youre happy with for quite some time to come

We bought our home for the location and thought it was a great investment and could grow into it and grow old in it (it's got 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths).

However, as much as it suits us now, I would eventually like to move to a different house. I'd still stay in the same area, but I want a less traveled block and something a little more secluded. But with baby #1 on the way and hopefully more, I don't think we'll be going anywhere soon!

Re: For those of you who own your home ....

We definitely just bought a starter home. We have a townhouse only 2 bedrooms. It's MORE than enough for now but if we decide to have more than 1 child ... we will outgrow it. I definitely want to move at some point and upgrade. But it doesn't look so promising. The prices of houses are outrageous. We live in S.I. and I'm not sure if the prices are like this everywhere but it's ridiculous. We keep our eyes open. It STINKS!

I wish we could just be happy with what we have. Neither one of our parents ever owned a home - this is such a big deal and instead of being happy we want more. I struggle with this all the time.

We would LOVE to buy a brand new house, but the taxes are so high.
We are on an acre of property, and are thinking of adding abig expansion, but I know our taxes will go up, but it is hard to find a house on an acre.

Re: For those of you who own your home ....

we are currently thinking/searching for another home...with more bdrms in it. We have a 3br..but one room is our home office/radio shack/den...and we cannot move that stuff to another room.

I asked rob if we can dormer our liv rm but he reminded me that we are already 2 stories, so I dont think our town will give us a permit for 3. (we have a 2 fam home).
Another option is kicking out the tenant and reformatting the downstairs accding to the original plans of the home...which would mean converting it back to a 1 BR (instead of 2) ..putting up a wall to close off their LARGE DR/LVRM and taking over that room for us.

dont want to do that since these ar GREAT tenants..and I dont really want to loose them.

so, we are going to sit with our financial advisor and seee if we could even possibly swing just buying another 2 fam..and completly renting out our current home.
will h ave to see what type of position that puts us in.
