For those who aren't living with FH

When are you going to start looking for a place together? After or before the wedding? Will you be buying something or renting first? Also are you staying on long island? I was just wondering because it seems like so much to plan for a wedding and a house all in one shot........

we are going to start looking in the summer we want to buy god willing! so hopefully things turn out this way...but if we have to rent no problem! either

I feel the same way!! We are planning on looking to get a place by end of spring beginning if summer next year with a late August wedding. We are probably going to rent at first but want to do a short lease or a month to month if possible this way after the wedding when we are ready to buy a house we can get out without any penalty. I don't know if this will be possible but that is our goal. We are going to stay on LI... for a long time we talked about moving bc of the cost but things have changed so we really ope to stay.

I dont know if we will be on LI or in CT yet depends on what sort of job FH finally finds. We will probably rent for a little while and move out a month before the wedding or have FH live a few months in an apartment while im still at home.

ETA: we would like a house but if we dont have enough for a down payment we will rent. it will be long island as FH works in the city and i work in garden city.

we started looking last year. prices seemed high and we didnt like anything. now that interest rates are lower, we were looking again around thanksgiving... but at that point we felt that we were running in 10 different directions. it was at the same time we were 'looking' for halls...but basically, nothing got done. so we decided to take a break and just RH shop. now that we have a hall, we are looking for vendors!!

but this past weekend we actually started looking at real estate again online. so we are def. open to it.

as for what kind? who knows. everything is still expensive and picking the area is going to be an issue between FH and me.

i have been spoiled growing up 1/2 block from a train station and walking distance to shops, so that independence from a car is still important to me. on the other hand, FH needs to walk to a bus to walk to a subway...or walk to the LIRR and pay more money...and that is okay with him. so we definately differ on the location.

we were mainly looking at co-ops, since queens is filled with them. all the new developments are condos, but they also are alot more $$$. we just started talking about a house. it really depends price and what we are getting.

i like the idea of other people shoveling snow and stuff...but FH says he can do that and i think he would rather own a home.

basically, if we cant agree or find anything we like, we will be renting......

....so idk! lol. i kno this post didnt help much. haha

Mainly we are trying to get a lot of the wedding stuff out of the way in this first year bc the second year we plan to house hunt. We are saving for both the wedding and a 20% down payment for a house in the range of 300k-400k so it is a lot. We'll prob start house hunting I'd say like 6-8 months before the wedding and in Long Island. I just get nervous that we'll find something we love and may not be able to afford getting it that soon. It's possible though we'll see. It just panics me to have to cover a mortgage payment while we're still paying for the wedding. Oh the stress......

we're going to be buying, actually decided over the weekedn to stay in bay ridge/dyker are, and were going to be looking at houses (prob 2 family so we can rent out and make some money from that), were going to start looking in the fall

eta: this is why i want the majority of stuff done for the wedding by the 1 year mark

FH and def want to live in either Queens or BK since we both work in the city, but want to raise our family out East where we grew up. I have no clue when we're gonna start looking though. I can't even think about that now!

we hope to find/close on a house by april sometime so we have time to move stuff in and get stuff settled before the wedding, that way when we get 'home' from the honeymoon, we'll be coming HOME

he will live in it for that first month and ill move in when we're married

I'm trying to convince FH that I should get to live there alone first if we find something sooner before we're married since my commute is so bad from SI to the city lol

FH and I will be moving in together as soon as he finds a job out here
We'll be renting unfortunately...after the wedding has died down we'll see where our finances are and as soon as we can afford it we'll def be buying!

We are just starting to look at apt, and condos. FH wants to move in now but i want to wait till at least Nov. We are paying for our wedding, so i don't want to waste a cent. It stinks cause everything is expensive.
