We painted every room from top to bottom and replaced all the windows.

We started with the necessities:
-New Roof (which meant removing the 30x20 porch roof b/c it was rotted and rebuilding the roof line.)
-New Septic

From there we started working on each room, first with the dining room, then the 2 guestrooms (new windows, painting, adding crown moulding & trim, having floors refinished.)

We're currently working on the family room, which will hopefully be completed in the next month or so.

It was different for me, we bought my sister out of her half of the house becuase my parents both passed away. But it is still being emptied out, and we are fixing it up at the same time. So far we have been going room by room, it is very hard to move into the house you grew up in and never really left , and then having it your own when you never left to begin with. So far we have gotten all new appliances, got a new chandelier for the foyer, reglazed the bathroom, new tv's, upgraded the cable, new BBQ,upgraded the electric, new air conditoners, new front door, and a new bow window, we are about to paint the outside of the house we hate the color and it is just too much $$ to vinyl side it, and then we will be ripping up the carpet we have oak floors under the carpet, and then we will be buying new furniture and emptying out the rest of the house, it looks so different it is starting to look the way we want it. It never ends.

We actually can't afford to do any work yet, but we've decided that we will do the roof first, then replace the windows, then the siding. More power to these people who had money left over to start work.

Just painting because as someone else above said that does make a huge difference.

First we had to get a new boiler, hot water heater and oil tank. Now we started the kitchen (new appliances, floor, cabinets and countertops)

We are starting a dormer in June (hopefully!) that will create a master bed, bath and closet.

Then, we will paint, decorate and furnish.

A lot to do!!! A LOT OF STRESS!

Demolition. We ripped down all the walls (panelling, sheetrock), even the insulation. Replaced windows, ripped up floors, removed kitchen...

We had the floors done first. I was told they should be done before painting.

Ripped out all the cabinets, built new ones, new counters, sink etc.
Then we painted & put up new light fixtures, new doors, & put carpeting down in the bedrooms.. this stuff really helped make a physical difference. We also did the floor in the bathroom.

Now that we have a little bit of extra money we did the floor in the kitchen & LR. Finishing the basement somewhat & completly re-doing the bathroom top to bottom.
This summer we put down all new grass in the back yard and fix up the garage including a new garage door.

I'm curious as to why?

the bathroom and kitchen, then it kind of tumbled into the whole house. We didnt do the work ourselves though, but I think its important to do your bathroom and bedroom first.

I definately disagree with this. I've always heard that you should do the floors last....that way it doesnt matter if paint gets spilled on it, or whatever.

I disagree with that as well. My DH is in Construction and always does painting before putting down new floors.

We ripped up all the wall to wall carpeting, let the floors breathe for a few days, and then had them sanded and polyurethaned.

We replaced every single interior door with 6-panel pine doors and new hardware.

We replaced the front door and sidelights.

We replaced the glass sliders to the back deck with french doors.

We put in ceiling lighting in every room.

We gutted the master bedroom bathroom and had it retiled.

Replaced all the windows that face the front of the house. We plan on doing the rest this spring ($$ made us do it in two shots).

We recently replaced all the kitchen appliances and will install granite countertops this summer.

Painted every room, and still have some to go! It's still a work in progress and we've been here almost 5 years.

We are doing on room at a time. Still on the first room because of lack of time to do it.

We raised the ceiling in the den, got rid a of a big window, and we will be installing french doors very soon. I am designing the ceiling/ lighing layout now, and are about to purchase the fixtures for the ceiling, and start the electrical. While that is being done, our bedroom furniture is on order.

Before that we installed central air. We are getting rid of the base board heating.

About the floors/painting, most people say to work from the top down - in other words, do ceiling/lighting first, painting second, floors last, etc., the obvious reason being that all the construction crap from everything else is falling onto the floor. If you do the floor first, you're risking ruining it when you do everything else.

That was what I thought too. But the floor guy and painter told me to do the floors first.
