Does it ever get any easier to deal with it? I know he died less than a month ago which is still pretty soon...but it feels sooo raw. Yesterday when I was going over the guestlist his name/address was there and I wanted to cry (I was at work, which is the only thing that stopped me). My mom told me to just delete it so that I wouldn't have to go through it every time...it ****** really badly.
Can you tell me your experience? I know I'll probably never get over it, but it'd be nice to know there will be a time when I'm not going to be set off into tears by looking at an address or pictures.

It does get easier, over time. FH and I have lost all of our grandparents. Just hang tight and remember the good times.

Re: For those who lost grandparents
All of my Grandparents have passed, and it comes in waves. Two of them passed before I was born, one when I was 8, and one when I was 17. For awhile it was easier, but the older that I've gotten, the more that I've struggled with the fact that I never had a relationship with them as an adult (or at all for those who passed before I was born), they won't see me get married or have babies or anything.
Somedays I just lose it and cry, when I think about how they won't be there. But I've personally found that the best way to deal is just to be more in touch with my spiritual side, and then I just feel like I can find them more everywhere, and that I have some sort of deeper connection.

Re: For those who lost grandparents
I lost my dad 10 yrs ago and I still cry almost every other day.....the wedding planning makes it worse but remebering the good times makes everyday life easier to get by. My grandfather also passed away a few years ago and its the same thing. I cry almost every other day but I remember the good times we had and I plan on doing things they did with me with my children to keep their memories alive but it doesnt get easier, it just gets a litle easier to get throug the day but it will always hurt as hard as it does now

Re: For those who lost grandparents
Honestly.. i just lost my grandmother this past August and it's still hard.. and it still hurts and just thinking about her i fill up with tears.. i refuse to take her off my guest list and just delete her.. i still have her stored in my cell phone too.. i already ordered her corsage with my florist.. so i asked them to still make it for her and i am going to pick it up the day before and bring it to the cemetery and place it on her headstone.. so it's like she is still a part of the big day.. i think what makes it hurt so much is knowing how excited she was for my wedding.. and realizing she's not gonna be there.. i know its going to make me emotional the day of.. but i know she wouldn't want me to be upset
i guess time will heal.. but being that we are planning a wedding right now that's what makes it even harder to cope with.. just know your grandfather will have the best seat in the house and will be shining down on you on your big day ... i know that's where my grama will be
RIP Granny.. <3 <3 <3

Re: For those who lost grandparents
awwww It will get better for you...please trust me on that... Never forget what they taught you, how they lived, their words, always make sure to keep them in your thoughts and keep their names alive.
It's so hard to lose anyone we love but time heals all wounds....I wish my grandparents had met FH...I wish they had seen me this happy. I do know that they're watching from somewhere..
here's my story... (very long!)
My grandparents raised me until I was 10 years old (parents migrated from peru when i was 2 and I didnt live w/them again until I was 10) TWhen I was 15 I went back to Peru and lived there for 2 years. My grandparents were my parents, they were and still are the most important, influential ppl in my life. In 2001 around July, my grandmother got really sick, she was hospitalized for a few weeks...I traveled to Peru for about 4 days and for some reason I couldnt visit her....its the way fate works....my gma told my mother...'I dont want Jeannette to ever see me like this, I want her to always remember me as a strong woman'....at the time it didnt make any sense and I hated myself for not fighting to see her ( one of the main reasons why i wasnt allowed was bc i was a grandchild and not her daughter, the nxt time was bc she was in ICU, it was so weird!!!) A few weeks later, she got a little better and was sent home, I called her and told her I was so sorry for not fighting to see her and that I would spend xmas with her that year. On November 11, I was taking midterms and my mom called me that night to tell me that gma passed away that morning....I was upset but calm...I knew I had lost an important person in my life, but at the same time I knew that she wouldnt want me to be an emotional mess and kill my midterms ... I ended up acing everything... (probably my best midterms at rutgers..lol) I wrote a letter that was read at her wake and my mother told me that the whole room was crying...everyone knew that my gma and i had a special bond...(i'm the oldest grandchild and I was the only child that lived with her while her other kids were adults).
Last year on November 3rd, my grandpa passed away. He had been ill for a while and was already feeling very lonely .. in his case it was weird because he always said he couldnt wait to be reunited w/my gma (talk about true love). I talked to him about FH and promised to bring him so they could meet ... he gave me his blessing and told me that FH better be a good man or he'll break his legs..(he was always a tough guy/joker) It's so crazy how fate works, he passed away the same month my gma did and in his sleep. I traveled to Peru for his wake/funeral and it was such a peaceful event. I cried, laughed, told stories, so many crazy emotions.
oh man writing this jsut made me cry too..but you know what i can also look back and smile at all the beautiful moments we spent together. stay strong, it will get better... and when you do feel like you're going to cry just think of all the happy moments and you will feel better.

Re: For those who lost grandparents
Both my paternal grandparents died before I was born. My maternal one's died in kindergarden and pre-k. So i'm not much help with that. But when my dad died I kinda went into a shell and stayed there for awhile. It's not a matter of it getting easier, cuz you'll always miss him and always realize he isn't there when you need/want him to be. The only thing that helps is time. The first year is the hardest, then all other major life events (wedding, baby) will bring up old feelings.

I love this idea. I might wanna do it for my dad.

it does get easier. Just because time goes on doesnt mean you will forget. My last grandparent died about 10 years ago. Your very fortunate that you were able to spend all the years that you did with him. I know that my grandparents were there the day of my wedding.

Re: For those who lost grandparents
I have lost all of my grandparents.. I never met my dad father.. he held me once and then died when iI was 1.. my moms grandfather dies when I was 11.. my dads mom dies when I was 16 - actually a month before my sweet sixteen.. and lastly my moms mom died when i was 23... That was roughest for me cause I was older and saw her a lot.. she went through lung cancer and the last memory I have of her is saying goodby at a hospess which later she had past... she happened to die the same week as my next door neighbor passed in an accident.. we were actually at my grandmothers wake when we found out about my neigbor and it was the hardest week of my life.. I alwasy relate them to eachother.. its like I never fully got to grieve over my grandmother cause my neighbor died the that same time and it was a complete shock..he was only28 and was 4 days apart from my brother.. they were best friends and gre up together.. I know that it gets easier as time passes. it has been almost 6 years and I have moved on.. but i never forget and it wlll always be with me.. All the wedding planning saddens me a little knowing i have no grandparents in my corner. but luckily FH's grandparents - well 3 of them are still alive and they are wonderful to me.. Its like I have my own grandparents there so that takes a little of the pain away for me..

Girls...thank you so much for the FMs and for posting your experiences here. You have no idea how much it is helping me to know that other people felt (and still feel) the same way I am feeling. Esp after all the drama last night, its nice to have this reminder of how wonderful this board can be in our lives.

Re: For those who lost grandparents
I hope everyone is right and that time heals all wounds. I lost my grandfather 2 weeks ago, and the solace I find is knowing he is resting peacefully. He suffered for 2 years and now that he is resting and looking down on us, it makes it easier to accept his death.
I was assembling my invitations and came across his. I did break down and cried knowing that I will not be able to talk to him the day of. I am holding on to his invitation and placing it on his tomb the next time I go to Peru.
Everyone says it gets easier, and I believe that one day it will. Maybe not next week, month or year, but one day. Hold on to the memories and just know that he WILL be there on your day, watching over you and enjoying everything.
