Like you, we are paying for our own wedding, so I understand where you're coming from re: the financial concerns.

We wrote up a tentative guest list before we even went hall shopping, and we calculated numbers for both 'with guest' and 'without guest'. There was a decent-sized difference in the numbers, but we ultimately decided that anyone over 18 will be invited with a guest. We just felt better about doing it that way. If we started picking and choosing who gets to bring a date (for example, only OOTers), our close friends who live nearby would get insulted. Yes, inviting 'and guest' will be an extra expense, but we feel it will save us some headaches from disgruntled invitees and everyone will have a better time at the wedding.

Also, remember that some people will bring a guest even if they aren't invited with one...

Good luck!

Nope. Our rule was if we had a name to write on the envelope, that person was invited with a guest. If not, they were invited solo. The only exception to this was one of DH's friends who didn't know a sole at the wedding except for DH and didn't have a GF at the time so he got an actual '& Guest'. Every wedding I've been to in the past year (which, including the next 2 in 8 days, is 11) has done it this way.

This is pretty much what we did, but we didn't have an overwhelming # of single people to invite.

I'm trying to do my guestlist, and it's getting out of hand... when I add '& guest' the list is out of control!!! I don't think that I need to add 'and guest' to anyone unless they are seeing someone. I don't want to pay for all of these random people that I've never met in my life. My friend did it this way and she saved herself alot of money and it was a much more intimate setting.

What do you think? Am I being crazy?
BTW - we're paying for this wedding all by ourselves!

I think you have every right not to invite people who aren't seeing anyone without a guest.

Thanks girls! Ultimately, I think I'm just going to not invite guests unless they are seeing someone.

For me you will ONLY be allowed a guest if:

* you are married
* Living together
* Serious relationships ONLY if I know your significant other

No exceptions for me..... sorry.

This wedding is going to cost us to much money.

it is hard when you pay for it yourself. i am in the same boat. i am inviting everyone with a guest. Most people will not bring anybody but i did want to give that as an option. i wouldn't want somebody to chose for me so i think it is only fair. JMO. Good luck!

We have too many people on our list too so I am only inviting people with a guest if they are in a relationship or engaged. I know this won't be a problem for most of my friends because they usually don't want to bring someone if they aren't dating them.

I think that is perfectly fine and will be doing the same. It's just ridiculous. You can't worry about offending this one and that one if they aren't invited with a guest that you don't even know. It's your day, you're paying for it, if they don't like it - then I say - don't come
