Fresh Mozzarella

Is fresh mozzarella one of those soft cheeses to stay away from while pregnant? I am dying for a tomato and fresh mozzarella salad!

From what I know fresh mozzarella is a no no.

I personally can't say Mozzarella cheese is a complete no, my doctor told me it was fine. The cheeses you want to stay away from are soft cheeses such as brie. I eat Mozzarella cheese every week for the protein and have no problems with it. Your doctor will give you a list of these types of things, what to eat, what not to eat...

If it is going to be heated up in a meal then it should be fine.
I had a few pieces of brie, just a few, during my pregnancy. Moderation is also important with any food group during pregnancy- except for cookies, candy and ice-cream- those are good all the time

I specfically asked about fresh mozza when I was preg and was told it was ok.
no brie, no blue cheese, no gorganzola.

mozz is made with pasteurized milk. it's fine to eat. you want to stay away from soft cheeses like brie, gorgonzola, feta um....there is another one i can't think of - oh and no veined cheese - like bleu cheese.

i cant' wait to have brie! again like michele said though - everything in moderation - if you have a little chunk it's fine....

To my knowledge, the fresh mozzarella that you buy in an Italian specialties store or deli (the kind that you see floating in water) is NOT pasteurized, and should be eaten in extreme moderation during pregnancy. Polly-O is safe.

I don;t know if the mozz is pasteurized or not, but I think if you're dying for the salad you should just have it!
I ate a lot of 'forbidden' foods during my pregnancy, just not everyday. Enjoy your salad and don't stress!

Thanks, Ladies.

Yes, JennRenee, the type of mozarella I am talking about is the little ball kind that is smothered in olive oil and Italian seasoning. I had a feeling it is unpasteurized.

I think I will splurge and have just two balls
