Garden City Hotel

Original post by Michy2009

I am not from Long Island, so I do not know much about places on LI. FH and I are thinking of staying here on our wedding night since we are not leaving for our honeymoon until a few days later. I have been reading reviews (on tripadvisor, etc) and alot of people have complained this place is run down and in desperate need of an overhall.Any opinions?

If you think this place is overated...any suggestions on an upsale hotel on LI? We really dont want to travel into Manhattan that night.

I think the GC Hotel is over rated and overpriced. The rooms are not that great. Try La Quinta Inn also in Garden City on Stewart Ave.

ITA!!! Never understood the hype.

Thank you ladies for your input.

Anyone know anything about these:

Glen Cove Mansion
The Andrew (Great Neck)
Roslyn Claremont

We have a hotel block at the Rosyln Claremont and staying there the night of our wedding as well. It is a clean hotel with nice homey rooms. Nothing ultra fancy - and we love it!

Re: Garden City Hotel

I find this thread incredibly insulting and disheartening. To call the GCH 'dumpy' is an enormous slap in the face. I think sometimes people feel that bc a place is expensive, it is okay to bash it... but if it is inexpensive, people tiptoe around giving any negative opinions on the place for fear of insulting someone.

My parents are paying $400 pp to The Garden City Hotel ALONE just to give my fiance and me the perfect wedding. I saw many of the rooms, including the penthouse suite, and they were fabulous. And I have stayed in places like The Plaza, the Waldorf, the Four Seasons, the Trump, The Ritz, the New York Palace, the Mandarin, the St. Regis and many, many more so I have a lot to compare to. And I was VERY pleased. And prior to booking, I spoke to manyyyyy people who stayed at the GCH and who had been to weddings there and I heard absolutely amazing things. Even FH's grandparents, who are from MA, had only top things to say about it, even saying that in their opinion, it was the best hotel on LI, and they have stayed there several times. And this was BEFORE we booked. So if anyone has any negative comments, please FM them to each other if necessary, or simply say something more tasteful, such as the GCH was not what you thought it would be. But some of these comments were just hurtful to me.

dont take someones opinions to heart. If you love the place why let others ruin that for you? Not everyone is going to like what you like.

Agreed and I do love it. But there is such a thing as tact.

And I may not like some RHs for myself but think they are fabulous for others.

I definitely understand where you're coming from I was a little taken aback by some comments on this since I'm staying there the night before and night of my wedding. I can only imagine your reaction. But, I'm confident in my own opinion of it, as you seem to be, so I'm not letting it bother me. And neither should you! I am certain your wedding will be amazing

I really think everyone is free to give their honest opinion i don't think it was by any means to offend any bride that's using GCH but I am personally not staying there because I can't afford it...I haven't stayed there and I have no yearn to stay there there either. I think it is good to hear bad and good things about a place you don't know before making the decision of paying money!

Well I already got opinions on it BEFORE I booked, so we are ALREADY spending the money and I don't want to hear awful things about it. If someone is asking about it bc they are considering staying there, and someone else had a bad experience there, then they should FM the first person questioning, or at least state negative opinions in a more tactful way.

There was no sarcasm or anger when I used the caps actually - I was just emphasizing those words as if I were using italics. I really meant NOTHING by it. (There it goes again! lol)

There's no need for people to be obnoxious when stating their opinions. End of story. I get that you can state opinions on here. But there's a thing called tact and decency.

Re: Garden City Hotel

why would anyone find this post 'insulting' is confusing to me? I am simply stating that on the reviews I have read...people have complained about the rooms. I am not insulting anyone who might be staying there. I, in fact was very interested in staying there myself because of the reputation that it has. I simply had second thoughts once I read reviews. Why anyone would take that as an insult to them, personally is beyond me.

If you are staying there...I certainly hope it is beautiful and everything you hoped it would be....enjoy!!

Re: Garden City Hotel

One other thing....I was not stating that the GCH would not be a lovely place to have a reception....in fact reviews I have read have said that it is a lovely place to have a reception, I was speaking about the hotel rooms.

I apologize if you are insulted....again, not my intention.

I have stayed at the Inn at Fox Hollow, it was really nice. I have also seen the honeymoon suite and it was lovely. I'd definitely recommend it.
