For those that don't vote...

'Apathy perpetuates tyranny'

What if the Third Estate in France didn't care enough to take action against Louis XVI?

What if Nelson Mandela didn't stand up to the Apartheid government of S. Africa?

What if the colonial Bostonians didn't throw the tea into Boston harbor to protest against the restrictive mercantilist practices of the British?

What if Rosa Parks decided to get up off that seat reserved for white passengers? And what if MLK didn't lead the Mongomery Bus Boycott?

What if those students didn't protest at Kent State in 1968?

What if the plebians didn't go on strike against against the patricians in the Roman state?

What if Gandhi didn't use a peaceful non-viiolent non-cooperative movement against the imperialistic British practices?

Our country, no, the foundation of democracy was born on ACTION! and the exercise of unalienable rights.

Apathy and inaction led to the rise of...

Communist repressive regimes in Cuba, Eastern Europe, China

dictatorial and repressive regimes like the Taliban in the Mid East.

Oh, and Hitler was ELECTED on one issue. He had a great plan to get Germany out of an economic depression... but look what else he did...

Am I the only one who didn't care for either of the candidates? I felt like I was voting for the lesser of two evils! I voted anyway!

I understand what you're saying and I think a lot of people felt this way--that there wasn't clearly a candidate to fully support. The way I approached this election was to find the candidate whose position was most in line with my view of the issues that were most important to me and that's who I voted for.

These are awesome! I think it so unfortunate that people don't realize the significance of being informed about politics and making their voices heard. If no one voted, what the hell would happen?

Where were all the young people?

If I heard correctly only 10% of young voters made it to the polls.
What a shame
It will be a sad 4 years for our country.

I'm 22 and I voted! As did most of my friends from school and home :)

Again, repost from another post. I've been asking this question of people all day... if you voted for Bush, please explain your reasons? You will not be attacked for them I am just curious to know. Really.

As Voltaire said, 'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.' For where my freedom ends your rights begin... again, 'the greater good' (see Locke, Hobbes)

Just like they say you shouldn't talk politics at work - probably the same here. It always gets heated. IMO too many people commenting that have no idea what they are talking about. It's like they just repeat what they've heard in the media, which is so obvious, but have no rational or intelligent opinion themselves. It's kind of funny actually. 'Bush is bad' is not an argument. And how can someone say Ohio and Florida are random states. What the heck does that mean? Because we live in NY we're better. FL has 27 electoral votes, we have 31 I believe. Jeez, CA has 55 does that make NY a random state. The US is a democratic nation, not jsut the NorthEast. Someone even said if Kerry was President 'all' the other countries would support the US - would never happen and thank God we don't have to find out. I actually talked to a teacher from Long Island who said they voted for Kerry because Kerry is better for teachers. If that's how you pick a President for the best country in the world IMO you should not be allowed to vote ever again. Especially since she has two kids under 5 years old. I think there's more important issues than your job security these days. Ridiculous. The bottom line is that whether you wanted Kerry or Bush - Bush convincingly won both the electoral and popular vote! It was a vote - there's a winner and a loser.

But unfortunately by the end of the next four years we will all lose. JMO

MONKEYBRIDE I AGREE. I WENT OUT AND VOTED. IT ALSO DIDNT HELP WITH THAT TEACHER THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAND IN VOTER REGISTRATION CARDS FOR HER STUDENTS AND NEVER DID. THERE ARE VOTES OUT THE WINDOW. WE WOULD AHVE BEEN BETTER OFF HAVING MICKEY MOUSE IN OFFICE!!!!! I VOTED FOR KERRY. BUSH DOESNT DESERVE TO BE PRESIDENT. HE HAS GONE TO WAR FOR NO GOOD REASON. IN THE WRONG COUNTRY ANYWAY. PLUS WHEN A DEMOCRAT IS IN OFFICE HOUSE PRICES GO DOWN AND WE DONT HAVE AS MUCH REVENUE IN OUR COUNTRY. WE WANT CHEAPER HOUSE PRICES. I AM SO DEPRESSED. KERRY SHOULD HAVE WON

I couldn't agree more!

What are you talking about????? Kerry won the electoral votes from NY. It is sad that many young people don't vote and some couldn't this year. However, no matter how many more votes Kerry got from NY it would not matter...he still won in this state. He needed mored votes from other states like Ohio.

As Voltaire said, 'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.' For where my freedom ends your rights begin... again, 'the greater good' (see Locke, Hobbes)

I voted for Bush for a few reasons. I personally did not have a strong liking for either candidate however, as a US citizen I have a right to vote thanks to many people who lost theirs lives for this priviledge. During the whole election Kerry said that the war went wrong and that he is going top fix it and make everything 'better'. That's fine but Kerry never said WHAT he was going to do. He never took a strong stand on anything and if he did he never gave examples. I want a leader who is sure of what he wants and what he is going to do for our country.
Second, with war there are ALWAYS issues. NOTHING ever goes as intended. Was everything in this war done correctly? No. However, we started something and we need to finish it. Wait, I stand corrected. The people who attacked us on 9/11 started this. Who all were from many of the MIddle Eastern nations. Kerry would have taken us out of the war. Then what was the point? This war would have ended up like Vietnam. I don't feel that Kerry could protect us from terrorists.
Third, our fight with the terrorists have been going on for years. They hate us. Think back to when Clinton was in office all of the attacks on our nation by the terrorists. The twin towers first attack, our troops being dragged through Somalia, our many navy ships that were bombed along with our embassy's. Terrorists are like bully's, they keep fighting harder until you fight back. I believe that if we stand down then we would have had in our country what Russia had in theirs. Remember a few months ago the school was attacked by terrorists. That could have been us.
Fourth, I want a president who's main priority is our nation, not what other nations think of us. So other nations don't like what Bush did. Well, the president is not out to do whats best for other nations. His job is to protect us.

There are my reasons that you wanted. Regardless, being president is a difficult job and whoever does it I give them credit. That is one job I would never want. And what people dont realize is that Congress is the important part of the decision making. A bill first goes through Congress before the president. If Congress passes it it then goes to the president. The president has the right to veto a bill. However, if this is the case the bill then goes back to Cngress for a second vote. If 2/3 of Congress vote against the president then the bill is made into a law. So who should we really be concerned with when voting?

As a person who voted for Kerry, I appreciate you sharing your opinions about your reason for voting.

I did not by any means find Kerry the perfect candidate, but I thought he would be able to do much more in terms of bringing back to what it was before Bush took office (no war, decent economy and all that good stuff). But unfortunately I remain dismayed by how many people were swayed by a campaign of fear promoted by Bush.

I never understand why people thought that Kerry did not take a stand on the war. The man has seen war firsthand and his opinions about the appropriateness of this war come from his experiences in battle. Meanwhile our current president is perceived as a better commander in chief because he mouths platitudes about hunting down and destoying terrorists without having ever been to war.

I think Kerry's opinions come from a desire to preserve lives not squander them.
Also, just because he believed the war was wrong did not mean that he would not carry out policies to protect the American people and American troops because it would have been something he inherited from the previous administration.

Secondly, Kerry never said he planned to pullout, but that he would try to shorten the legnth of the war so that more American lives would be spared.

Finally you are right terrorist are bullies, but you know what they are also like hydra, when you cut one off, more appear. I think a lot of people believe that our military strength will crush these people, but these people do not fear death, nor do they fear might and that is why even when they are hopeless, they continue to fight.

Unfortunately, we have re-elected a president who will wage war on 'terrorism' but has no real plan for peace. Yss, things do go wrong when there is war, but this war was not warranted. I don't think that 1100 dead troops and 100,000 Iraqi deaths (primarily women and children) should be the end results of faulty intelligence that took us to war in Iraq. Remember Bush's own people established that there was no link between Iraq and Al queda. So why the hell are we in Iraq? I guess because we're convinced as a nation that all 'Middle Eastern' people are 'evil'.

I too wanted a president that was for our nation not his personal gain. I want someone who cares about protecting people's right to a decent livelihood, decent healthcare and quality of life within our border as well as abroad. Too many people neglected to pay attention to those issues in their concern about being safe from terrorism. This safety from terrorism in truth is something that I don't believe any presidential candidate can really deliver to the American people.

I believe that the world is now more dangerous for us since we have gone to war than before it was.

I respect your opinions, becuase they made me think and while I am sure you don't agree with I have said. I wanted to maybe throw some stuff your way you might not have considered.

I really hope that for all our sakes the hopes that you have in George Bush do come to fruition.

Me personally, I think we have much to fear.

Re: GEORGE BUSH WON

A nice summation of how I, and probably some of us, feel right now. From The New Republic....

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY: According to the voter breakdown that CNN is currently hawking, the top reason that Bush voters gave for supporting their guy was not the economy, not Iraq, not even the war on terrorism. It was 'moral values.' That's right, with American soldiers dying overseas, Al Qaeda still gunning for us at home, the deficit spiraling, the gap between rich and poor growing, Social Security on the brink, etc., etc., Bush's reelection was driven by a bunch of folks freaked out over the thought of gay marriage and stem-cell research.

God save the republic.
