Getting married before the wedding
Does anyone know if it is ok to get a marriage license (for insurance purposes) before the actual wedding? My FH and I are debating just going to City Hall and getting married. I need to go on his insurance and I can't unless we're married. My question is whether this is going to be ok with the temple we're having the wedding at. I'm sure other people have done this before but I was just wondering what people's opinions were. It seems kind of weird to get married early just for medical insurance but we're getting married in February anyway...

medical insurance is the most precious thing i feel...ask the person who is marrying you. i understand how you must feel. i was laid off work once for 6 months with no coverage and the cobra was so much! i was thinking the same thing once but didnt do it. i hope you are ok!

Re: Getting married before the wedding
i'm fine i'm just sudent teaching starting in September so I have to quit my job. Cobra is too expensive and the insurance through my college is for a full year when I really only need it for one semester. We're really just debating this option. I want to see what other people's opinions are.

Re: Getting married before the wedding
My GF did it to get on her now hubby's insurance, she needed to have surgery and she was in college, when they did the big shing ding at the church they did not call it a marriage ceremony they called it something else, like a renewal but that was not the word. I thin it is ok, They are 7th day adventist so I do not know if they have different rules for your religion you should inquire

There are a few girls on weddingchannel.com, under Local, NY that have done this. It works out fine. but most girls hide it from everyone! That is also a lot to hide.

Insurance
I don't know about getting married before the wedding, but I know that you can get short-term emergency type insurance on-line very inexpensively. I did it for the summer between college & lawschool -- for 3 months I think it cost like $150. The only thing is that it ony covered emergency stuff. I figured that I don't go to teh doctro that often & if I needed to pay for a couple of visits or prescriptions myself it would still be cheaper than paying for Cobra. I can't remember what company I went through...wish I could 'cause my insurance is cut off at the end of the month & I don't start work till September...Good luck!

double check with the insurance company that they don't have domestic partner insurance. some of the big insurance companies, like mine (blue cross blue shield) will cover a 'domestic partner', someone who basically has lived with you , share the same address, etc. or, you could always get the certificate, and just not tell anyone. it will be your little secret.

Re: Getting married before the wedding
ONe of my friends did that years ago. They were legally married in November but had a the wedding in February. They didnt tell too many people about the civil ceremony and consider the february date their anniversary. But I don't know how this would affect a religious ceremony. If you are married a city hall they would be the ones signing the license making it legal and the officiant (preist, minister, rabbi, etc) at the ceremony would bless the marraige in your religion. I would double check with them though.

Re: Getting married before the wedding
Am I the only irresponsible romantic on the list? Or perhaps I'm just not as nice as everyone else, who is being so supportive...
. How terrible that you have to make this choice! If it was me, I couldn't do it unless it was an absolute last resort (as in there is no way I could afford insurance otherwise.) I think that having a civil ceremony would take away from the significance of your day in February surrounded by all your friends and family. I'd sooner cut flowers or something else to cover the insurance costs. **SIGHS** Welcome New Vendors
