I have a friend who is facing a wedding gift dilemma. She is traveling to the Dominican Republic for her friends destination wedding. She is spending a lot of money for the flight and hotel. In addition to that, she will need some spending $$. Would you still give the bride and groom a wedding gift after all of the $$ she is spending to be with her that day?
I need opinions for her and I thought this was the best place to come and ask.
Thanks.

Re: Gift for Destination Weddings
if she can't do it, don't stress.. gifts are not expected at a Destination Wedding and shouldn't be. The bride/groom should be aware how much it cost to go down there just for them.

Re: Gift for Destination Weddings
I went to a destination wedding and gave $100 in an envelope from FI and I. Which is less than what I would give if it was here.
So I guess....my opinion....I would give something.

Re: Gift for Destination Weddings
My FH and I went to a desintation wedding and he was totally against giving a gift. He couldn't see the reasoning behind it. So what do I do I spend like $200 on a shower gift trying to compensate for the fact that we would not be giving a wedding gift. During the wedding weekend FH asks a friend of his who was also attending the wedding what him and his wife were doing. Though his friend didn't want to give a gift either I think his wife made him. Long story short I am stuffing another $200 of my money into the wedding card during the reception. Nice huh? What could I say FH proposed while we were on this wedding/vacation.

Re: Gift for Destination Weddings
I am going to a DW in Aruba. The bride and I are really good friends. I know they both do not expect gifts of any kind, but I think we will give one anyway.
Also, if the bride is having a shower before the wedding - your friend might consider giving a little extra for that then she would normally give for a shower and forgo the wedding gift.

That's another problem, she is not having a engagement party, shower, or bach. party...so it's not really an option for her.

that sounds like the bride and groom are aware of the extra expense of the DW and are not having the engagement party, etc because of it.
Maybe she could get a gift certificate to the spa at the hotel for a couples massage? She may even be able to give it as a joint gift with another who friend is going.
but, I truly think in the case of a DW the bride and groom feel your attending is gift enough.

That's true. I didn't even think of that. The spa thing with another couple is a good idea.
Thx.!

Re: Gift for Destination Weddings
We are planning on getting married in Italy and we will be specifying in our invites that our guests presence is a grand enough gift so therefore we will not have a registry. I couldn't imagine anyone having an out of country destination wedding and expect to be given gifts. Especially once you tally up the expenses your guests will acquire.
