So, my FFIL and FMIL told FH that we might as well save our money for the E-party b.c no one was going to give us anything b.c we are not supposed to receeve gifts. Is this true??? ***??? I thought this was EXTREMELY insensitive and rude b.c technically it should be THEM paying for the damn E-Party NOT us. ugh.

i have been to MANNNNYYY engagement parties and we never went empty handed. We always give around $100-150 dollars. Unfortunately our e-party is costing us around 6k, so.. if we get any kind of money, its not going towards any wedding, it's going to the cost of the party!!!! I don't expect anything, it's something we wanna do for ourselves, but...money would help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never been to an engagment party. I am going to my first one this month (A friend from HS). I hate to say this but, $100-$150 seems like a lot to me. I am trying to save for my wedding....
Well....we really have been to mostly family or really close friends. Alot of the parties we go to our my FH squad guys, and they tend to give alot for eachother. I don't know, its not really me,.he picked the amount, i go along with it. But i think everyone can give whatever they want. There is no set amount for what to give, at least i don't think. I guess FH and i like to be generous :) Maybe thats why we are in so much debt!

I know this is going to make me sound very materialistic but here it goes:
** I think that if the party is at a house then you can get away w. maybe a $ 50 gift. BUT if the party is at a restaurant or Reception Hall, then you have to understand that the couple is paying at least $40 for 1 person to be there. If you bring a date, then that would make it 80. This is not including the cake, decorations, favors , invitations etc. Sometimes E-parties turn into mini weddings, and they can get pretty expensive. i.e. 6 - 10 K . I guess what I am trying to say is that it is rude to give a cheap gift. I like to be generous when it comes to gifts. I think of it as 'wishing good luck to the couple'. For an E-party I wold give MINIMUM 100 per couple. (and this is if I am broke) for weddings at least 300 per couple. .. If I am in a poor financial situation, I simply don't bring a date (even if its FH) , that way I can afford to cover my cost+ a profit....and worse case scenerio... I wont go.

I've never heard of anyone showing up at a party, especially an e-party without a gift. Tradition or not, if you're invited to a party that someone is paying for, you should have the courtesy to show some appreciation with a gift, even if it's something small

I totally agree. We are the same way. For an E-party we usually give them cash that would at least cover for the both of us, plus a small gift off the registry, or if it's someone close then I would probably double it. And I totally agree that if you are broke, then you should go alone, so you can still give a nice gift. But I may not agree with not going, I think if you were really broke and really couldn't afford to give a nice gift, then maybe try to be creative and make something sentimental to you and the one throwing the party.

I guess you are a little more creative than I am. LOl, a friend of ours gave the bride a scrap book w. pictures of bride and groom in college. It was so pretty and sentimental. The bride loved it...BUT even though she loved it, she still couldnt believe she didnt give money. lol. It is really hard when you are paying for things yourself. I guess sometimes it makes you forget the whole point of a wedding or E party .

We did have one person show up without a gift or even a card (and I mean literally, a card, not a card with cash) and never sent anything later... and it was a groomsman. he is not a native NYer and claimed he didn't know... and FH told him not to worry about it.
I thought it was a little weird to not even show up with a congratulations card and to never send anything afterwards after seeing everyone else bring gifts but
